VT Nurse Leadership Fellows Program Nominations Sought
The new Vermont Action Coalition (funded by a Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation grant) is seeking nominations of 25 emerging nurse leaders to be
groomed for positions of strategy and influence. This initiative acts on the
Institute of Medicine’s (2010) “Future of Nursing “recommendation to “prepare
and enable nurses to lead change and advance health”. Nurse fellows will be
prepared to seek board positions specifically related to the IOM report
recommendations, including state and local government boards and commissions,
elected office, hospital boards, and community boards. The nurse fellows will be
expected to participate in four sessions (April – in person, June, November and
Jan 2015 - online) that center on:
 Self-knowledge and self-management as essential leadership skills:
analyzing emotional intelligence, identifying strengths and skill gaps;
creation of opportunities for individual growth and development in the
different dimensions of leadership
 Team analysis and facilitation; How to lead teams and promote and
enhance team relations and communication
 Strategies for career development
 Governance as a key leadership opportunity: How to recognize and
prepare for Board/community service opportunities, how to develop and
deliver a persuasive message, public relations and media relations, and
leading patient, nursing and healthcare advocacy.
 Understanding and using health policy, health care reform, and health
finance as essential leadership tools
In addition, class participants will be paired with experienced leaders or mentors.

Criteria for nomination or self-nomination:
An experienced registered or advanced practice nurse with Vermont
unencumbered license, who desires to be a catalyst for change and who seeks
leadership opportunities in positions of influence on a commission or board
related to health or health care, locally, nationally, or internationally.
Course faculty:
Betty Rambur PhD RN. Professor of Nursing and Health Policy, University of
Vermont.
Selection as a Fellow includes registration and lodging for Vermont Organization
of Nurse Leaders’ Summit as well as ongoing mentoring. Build your skill set and
