DNA Structure: Deoxyribonucleic acid is shaped like a __________ __________ , or
twisted ladder.
DNA is made up of ____________________. A nucleotide contains a __________,
a __________, and a __________ .
What part makes up the Side Poles of the ladder? __________ __________
What part goes in Between the side poles?
__________
Which bases pair together? _____ with _____ and _____with _____
Traits can be inherited or environmental

Watson and Crick’s discovery didn’t just win them the Nobel Prize because the double
helix is pretty. The double helix showed something called: semiconservative
replication. You modeled that process when you made a copy of your original DNA
strand (all red twizzlers) by using the chocolate twizzlers in the lab. You were able to
use the original DNA model as a template to create the copies. Draw and explain that
process in the space below.
NOTE: When you draw and explain, you must use PICTURES AND WORDS!!!
1) Define each word, then write your OWN definition of the word.
a. Heredity – ________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
b. DNA – ___________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
c. Genes – __________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
d. Alleles – __________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
e. Chromosomes – ___________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
2) Fill out the following diagram with the words: Chromosomes, DNA, Alleles, Genes.
3) How do they relate? Explain how each of the two terms below relate to each other in a
sentence.
a. DNA and Chromosomes (example: DNA and chromosomes relate to each other
because chromosomes are made of DNA).
b. DNA and Genes ___________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
c. Genes and Alleles __________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
d. Genes and Chromosomes ___________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
4) In 2-5 sentences, put the pieces together and explain the complete relationship between
DNA, Genes, Alleles, and Chromosomes.
