The Lipoprotein(a) Foundation History of the Organization In May 2013 the Lipoprotein(a) Foundation was founded by Sandra Revill Tremulis, an empowered patient who inherited high lipoprotein(a) from her father. At age 39, Sandra experienced a major cardiovascular event and nearly died. Sandra was fit and otherwise very healthy; her cholesterol was normal. Her only risk factor for cardiovascular disease was high lipoprotein(a), which at that point had not been detected. The high lipoprotein(a) was only diagnosed after her heart event. She thought for many years that her diagnosis was rare. A long-time professional in medical device marketing, Sandra investigated numerous resources for information about her diagnosis, condition and prognosis. But information was scarce. In 2013, with the publication of new data, Sandra discovered that ~30% of the U.S. population are estimated to have high levels of Lipoprotein(a); it is now considered a causal factor for premature cardiovascular disease. Sandra lost her father to a massive heart attack when he was just 50 years old; she doesn’t want anyone to have to experience the preventable, tragic loss of a loved one due to high lipoprotein(a). The Mission The goal of the Lipoprotein(a) Foundation is to save lives by increasing awareness of this inherited lipid disorder, and advocate for routine testing and a specific treatment for high lipoprotein(a). The foundation offers free, direct access to clinical resources and general information for all audiences, as well as ongoing updates about all topics and issues related to elevated Lp(a) and an opportunity to join a global virtual community focused on this widespread but little –understood condition. We are a non-profit organization (501c(3) pending), supported on a pro bono basis by dedicated professionals and currently funded entirely by private donations and grants. Patients, family members, healthcare providers, media and all interested others are welcome to join the foundation, to learn more about the condition, the risks, and what to do to get and remain healthy.
