We will then work on decimals in Chapter 3. Enrichment: We are continuing Academy of Math and will take a posttest on January 12th to check our progress over the last 8 weeks. French will be continued until the end of the grading period on January 14th, when we will switch to 9 weeks of ISAT preparation. On January 19th we will be welcoming our student teacher for math, Miss Castenada, from Bradley. She will be with us until May. She is very excited about working on math with the sixth graders, especially when she heard what a great group of students the sixth graders are and how much they love learning math. READING & LANGUAGE Reading: Group 1 (Blue group) is reading the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. Some activities they will be doing are looking up the original meaning of their name, developing their own community with rules and punishments, and making a career plan for their life. Group 2 (Green group) is reading the novel Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. Some activities we are doing are drawing their own secret place, researching a museum on the Internet, while taking a virtual tour, and racing to see who would be the fastest runner in sixth grade. Group 3 (Purple group) is reading the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong. Some activities are brainstorming a list of their chores and responsibilities and writing about why a dog is so important to a family. Language: In Unit 2, we are learning about nouns. These include common, proper, singular, plural, and possessive. We will be making a "Person, Place, or Thing" book using magazines to cut out these types of words. Spelling: Each Reading group has their own set of words which goes along with the novel they are currently reading. These words are on www.spellingcity.com or Mrs. Miller's school website. Some activities we are doing to learn our spelling words are using shaving cream to practice spelling our words and cutting out our words from the Number 4 newspaper. Again, pretests are on Wednesdays and posttests are on Fridays. SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES Science: We have been discussing many difficult topics and concepts in the textbook, Motion Forces and Energy. We will soon finish this textbook and move on to a very exciting unit over wind turbines and alternative energy sources. Miss Starman has acquired $1500 in grant money to help fund the wind turbine project. It will be an exciting time for her and her students as they research different types of energy and even build their own wind turbines! Social Studies: All the classes worked hard at completing their Illinois Unit research. They created Glogsters that wrapped up this unit. We have also been finishing up the study of the seven continents and will end our geography study with a final test. We will be moving into a more history-based curriculum with a unit over the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas. Please make sure to check out the new class web page for Miss Starman’s classes, sstarman.weebly.com. Here you will find not only information about homework and important dates, but also examples of everyone’s work, like the Glogs, posted on the web page.
