Heritage Day – Wednesday 24 September 2014

The Parkview Residents’ Association is hosting ParkWords (Parkview Literary Festival) on Heritage Day 24
September, to celebrate the remarkable literary talent that we have in our suburb and surrounds.
Informal literary talks and debates will take place throughout the day. Themes for the discussions
include journalism, Johannesburg, heritage, education, politics in SA, politics Africa, History (World War
One), fiction, business, travel, ‘So you want to be an author?’, food, motorsports, life and death.
Participating authors and literary folk who are giving up their time for free include: Indra de Lanerole,
Anton Harber, Justice Malala, Jessica Pitchford, Tanya Zack, Nechama Brodie, Laurice Taitz, Jonny
Steinberg, Mary Metcalfe, Brahm Fleisch, Stephanie Matseleng-Allais, Ray Hartley, Antony Altbeker,
Shireen Hassim, Tim Couzens, Richard Steyn, Michelle Magwood, James Wylie, Steven Sidley, Craig
Higginson, Rob Rose, Peter Bruce, Denis Becket, Sandi Savadier, Claire Keeton, Peter Delmar, Kate
Rogan, Joanne Richards, Louise Grantham, Hamilton Wende, David Smith, Kate Sidley, Andrea Burgener,
Sarah Emily Duff, Andre van Niekerk, Bryan van Niekerk, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Kate Shand, Judith Ancer,
Thurlow Hanson- Moore and Mandy Collins.
Attendance is free and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Forty to 60 seats will be available per
venue. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of each literary event. If you live close by,
please walk as parking may be a problem.

Literary talks and discussions at the Library, Stelle, Scusi, Croft & coffee and the Perfect Cup
foyer at 10h00, 11h30, 14h00 and 15h30 – see enclosed programme for details
One-hour Heritage walk tour though Parkview with Dennis Adams and Raymond Cordosa.
This will start with the unveiling of a Johannesburg Heritage 2014 blue plaque – 14h00 to
15h00/30 (meet at Weber House at 13h45)
Makarapa Making – see some township artists make "Festival Makarapas" with "books" .
Selfies can be taken at the Proudly South African stand next to Love Books outside the Old
Lake Market.
The Mask at Weber House is offering a complimentary Read your Skin.

Jumping castles and balloon sculptor (supplied by Pam Golding Properties)
Buskers and facepainter (supplied by the Business Owners’ Association of Parkview)

Bookmaking at the Library - Create a book with your own unique voice. All materials supplied. All
age groups welcome (supplied by the Library) – ongoing throughout the day
Watch out for the Gruffalo – who will be visiting Parkview for the first time
Food

Eats and refreshments will be served at the many restaurants along the strip. The Mother Truckers
will also serve food in the Parkview Library parking.
Books
·
Books will be on sale via the Love Books stand in front of the Foyer Coffee Shop. Meet and chat to
interesting local authors.
·
Travelling book vendor, The Pavement Bookworm, Philani Dladla will also sell books
·
Attendees are requested to bring used books to the library for the library to resell to raise funds for
new books
