Haughmond View Medical Practice Newsletter FOCUS ON…… Cold & Flu - Symptoms and treatments may wish to take paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce your temperature and ease aches and pains. Your local pharmacy can offer advice on how to manage the symptoms and purchase over-the-counter medicine which many help manage some of your symptoms. In most cases, antibiotics (which are used to treat bacterial infections) aren’t necessary. Colds and The season of coughs, colds and ‘flu’ will soon be on us, along with all those unpleasant flu, and most coughs, are caused by viruses, so antibiotics can’t help. symptoms which make us feel generally unwell Most of us will have a cold this autumn or winter, and some of us will have the flu. Colds and flu are caused by viruses which can be spread through droplets which are coughed and sneezed out by an infected person or transferred via a person's fingers or surfaces, such as door handles, if there are infected droplets on them. Cold symptoms The main symptoms of winter cold and flu bugs are: Children and colds Children can be treated using some over-thecounter painkillers, to ease discomfort and help bring down a fever. Both paracetamol and ibuprofen are available as a liquid for children, and can be given from the age of three months. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor if you aren’t sure which treatments you can give your child. If you are at all concerned about your child please call the surgery for advice.
