INTRODUCTION:
Community and Service Project is a project that provides a platform for the university students to
give service and appreciation to selected village in Penang. After careful observation on the
available villages in Penang, we have realized that the awareness of the importance of education
is surprisingly low in village. According to the headmistress of SJK (C) Keow Kuang, the
students in the school are not eager to strive for academic excellence and lack the motivation to
work hard, let alone entering IPTA or IPTS in either Malaysia or overseas. The students do not
think that they can enter university someday in the future. Besides, the dearth of information and
knowledge among parents regarding available routes towards university has further worsened the
situation and the consequence is the low percentage of village students entering university.
Therefore, we from University of Malaya have decided to carry out this project to improve the
current condition.

PROGRAM OF THE PROJECT
The date is set at Raya holiday and time is office hour (8am-5.30pm except campfire night) to
provide convenience among parents/guardians. We aim to construct the formwork of “education
and culture are important” among the students through a variety of activities and games.
Highlight of the Program
To boost the academic awareness among primary schools students, we come out with numerous
activities. First and foremost, we have a sharing session by current university students which is
us to the primary school students. We will share our university life (eg. Activities that we have
joined) and general courses that are offered in most universities. This is to widen their horizons
and cultivate their interest in entering university. Besides, we will give a thorough explanation on
how to enter university and the pros and cons of each pathway. Secondly, we have “Golden Info
from Books”. We will choose various books from library and set some questions based on the
books, and return it back to book rack afterwards. Each of the team will have to overcome some
difficulties before having the chance to read the books and answer the questions. This activity
aims to instill “reading is fun” among students. Thirdly, we will have “Little Science Lab” where
we allow the students to carry out simple scientific experiments in order to expose themselves to
the world of science practically. Next, we have the cultural workshop where we will work
together with the students to prepare a traditional food. Participating students will have to make
traditional clothes out of newspaper as well. Moreover, the organizing committee members will
stay with adopted family (participant’s family) throughout the event to enhance the relationship
between both parties and have a closer understanding on the particular student. Lastly, we will
have a family day. Participating students will be asked to close their eyes and are encouraged and
guided by us to speak out their true feeling towards their parents. At the same time, we will
arrange their parents to listen behind them. After all students have spoken, we will ask the
students to open their eyes and they will see their parents in front of them.
10.
Expected outcome and prospects for the future impact
Through this project, we expect to see improvement of academic awareness and traditional
culture among students and villagers, as well as motivated and lively students in school who dare
to chase after what they desire in the future, especially in entering university. We hope that these
values can be cultivated among the students since young and spread it to larger community
through them as they will be the future pillar of support of this community. We also hope that
activities like what we are doing now can be continued in their generation to benefit future
generation.
**We have gotten the approval from SJK (C) Keow Kuang but we have not gotten the official
letter from them.
