Purpose of Job
The Technical Supervisor (Surveyor) is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis and
specifying of structural maintenance and remedial works to the cemeteries, memorials
and properties to the Commission’s standard of excellence in accordance with policies and
procedures all as detailed in the Technical Services Structural Manual Parts 1 to 3.
Delegated Financial Authority as directed and authorised by the Technical Manager,
Works (TMW) or Director United Kingdom and Northern Area (DUKNA).
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
General
 Inspects and surveys the Commission’s cemeteries, properties and memorials to assess their structural
condition, identifies actual and potential problems and provides appropriate construction solutions. Inputs
information into systems as required to generate work instructions and to identify financial risk to the
Commission.

Pre – orders materials and equipment to allow the future works to be carried out within the agreed
programme of works.

Implements the Commissions health & safety policy including risk and COSHH Assessments. Maintaining
department records on these matters.

Liaises with Local Authorities in advance in order to obtain all necessary permissions to allow the cycle
maintenance teams to carry out works in their cemeteries, and to ensure compliance with the authorities’
memorial masons registration schemes.

In conjunction with the TMW and Technical Supervisor, Works (TSW) and DUKNA, plans the inspection cycle
and works cycle and produces monthly progress reports TWM, DUKNA and liaison with the Estates
Department

Controls and actions alterations, amendments and additions to headstones and memorials.

Ensures that appropriate technical assistance is provided to Regional SMCs.

Undertake other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the role.
Team Performance (where applicable)
 Ensures the SMC teams observe Commission Values and Health & Safety procedures and use safe working
practices in compliance with the CWGC OHSAS 18001 Manual.
 Coaches and supports SMC and Works teams with respect to inspection, diagnosis and structural
maintenance and remedial works matters.
Project Responsibilities (where applicable)
 Undertakes projects in agreement with the TMW and in accordance with the Commissions policies and
procedures.
 Prepares contract and project documents in accordance with Commission policies and procedures, for works
to be carried out by contract including preparation of invoices for signing off by TWM or DUKNA.

Knowledge & qualifications/experience required
 A degree or equivalent in Building Surveying, Construction or other relevant area
 Previous building surveying and work specification writing experience
 Experience of managing contractors, Suppliers, 3rd party stakeholders and customer related issues
 Experience of managing projects
 Knowledge of the Commissions Technical Services Manual or equivalent documentation.
 Some knowledge of Horticultural is desirable but not essential.
 A good level of computer literacy using Microsoft packages – Word, Excel and Outlook is essential.
 A good working knowledge of Microsoft Project and AutoCAD is desirable.
 A full (manual) driving licence.

 Negotiation with Contractors and Suppliers to attain optimum service levels at best level of cost.
