Washington State Food and Nutrition Conference
This conference will highlight WA State programs that are helping to
move the food system forward by reconnecting eaters with the roots of
their edible history figuratively, literally, and culturally. Panel
discussions will examine farm-to-institution projects, food programs
embracing cultural diversity, the urban agriculture movement, and
human rights within food systems. Our keynote speaker is Melinda
Hemmelgarn, MS, R.D. and a locavore-friendly lunch will be provided by
Herban Feast catering.

nutritionist," and award winning journalist. A former W.K. Kellogg Food

The Pacific Northwest Regional Center of Excellence (PNWRCE) will begin its third year of funding on March 1, 2011. The PNWRCE is a
consortium of academic and research institutions in the Pacific Northwest created to advance research on NIH/NIAID Category A, B, and C Priority
Pathogens and emerging infectious diseases. The PNWRCE supports two types of awards/projects: (i) Career Development Awards to support
junior faculty training for research on priority pathogens, and (ii) Developmental Research Projects (Pilot Projects) to support innovative research
on priority pathogens that may include high risk/high reward initiatives. Applicants can propose work on any of the NIAID Group I, II or III
emerging or re-emerging pathogens (as defined at http://www.niaid.nih.gov/topics/emerging/pages/list.aspx) but priority will be given to projects
that complement the research themes of the PNWRCE and utilize its unique resources. This announcement describes the solicitation of
applications and the review process for proposals for the two components. Follow the PNWRCE link (http://www.octri.org/octri/funding/) to

Welcome, Cathy Johnson! Cathy has joined AID as the new Administrator of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
and Division of Rheumatology effective September 1, 2010. We have decided to have these two Divisions under one
Administrator. We are delighted that Cathy accepted our offer to this position. Cathy has most recently been the
Administrator for the Division of Rheumatology and “Acting Administrator” for the Division of Cardiology; prior to that she
was an Administrator in the Department of Pharmaceutics for fourteen years.
We wish to thank Jenn Dickey for her outstanding job as the interim AID administrator!
Michael Remington, PA retired on August 24th. Michael has dedicated 35+ years of stellar clinical research work in the Virology
Division. Michael has taught more than one generation of clinical virologists about the natural history of genital herpes, has done
many studies that were called "impossible", and has contributed to the bulk of our scientific knowledge regarding the
pathogenesis, clinical and virologic manifestations of genital HSV, and therapeutics. He has also reassured countless patients
with a new diagnosis of genital herpes and has retained devoted research participants for years or decades.

A thriving practice consisting of 3 board certified infectious disease physicians, two physician assistants, a nurse practitioner and an
exceptional support staff seeks a fourth ID physician. Located in Pensacola, Florida, the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infections

comprised of a traditional medical practice (Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infections); a non-profit (HIV Care Center), and a
consultation service for infection control (Infection Control Services). A wide range of infectious diseases are treated including: HIV/AIDS,
hepatitis, TB, skin/tissue/bone infections and non-healing wounds. There is a busy office infusion center and active clinical trials. The practice
offers a two year track to partnership with no buy-in.
