These three-year fellowships will be awarded to students engaged in their doctoral dissertation research. The Pacific Northwest Regional Center of Excellence (PNWRCE) will begin its third year of funding on March 1, 2011. The PNWRCE is a consortium of academic and research institutions in the Pacific Northwest created to advance research on NIH/NIAID Category A, B, and C Priority Pathogens and emerging infectious diseases. The PNWRCE supports two types of awards/projects: (i) Career Development Awards to support junior faculty training for research on priority pathogens, and (ii) Developmental Research Projects (Pilot Projects) to support innovative research on priority pathogens that may include high risk/high reward initiatives. Applicants can propose work on any of the NIAID Group I, II or III emerging or re-emerging pathogens (as defined at http://www.niaid.nih.gov/topics/emerging/pages/list.aspx) but priority will be given to projects that complement the research themes of the PNWRCE and utilize its unique resources. This announcement describes the solicitation of applications and the review process for proposals for the two components. Cathy has joined AID as the new Administrator of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Division of Rheumatology effective September 1, 2010. We have decided to have these two Divisions under one Administrator. We are delighted that Cathy accepted our offer to this position. Cathy has most recently been the Administrator for the Division of Rheumatology and “Acting Administrator” for the Division of Cardiology; prior to that she was an Administrator in the Department of Pharmaceutics for fourteen years. We wish to thank Jenn Dickey for her outstanding job as the interim AID administrator! Michael Remington, PA retired on August 24th. Michael has dedicated 35+ years of stellar clinical research work in the Virology Division. Michael has taught more than one generation of clinical virologists about the natural history of genital herpes, has done many studies that were called "impossible", and has contributed to the bulk of our scientific knowledge regarding the pathogenesis, clinical and virologic manifestations of genital HSV, and therapeutics. He has also reassured countless patients with a new diagnosis of genital herpes and has retained devoted research participants for years or decades. ID Physician Opening A thriving practice consisting of 3 board certified infectious disease physicians, two physician assistants, a nurse practitioner and an exceptional support staff seeks a fourth ID physician. Located in Pensacola, Florida, the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infections (www.infectioncenter.com) was established 22 years ago and continues to expand due to increased demand for its services. The practice is comprised of a traditional medical practice (Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infections); a non-profit (HIV Care Center), and a consultation service for infection control (Infection Control Services). A wide range of infectious diseases are treated including: HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, TB, skin/tissue/bone infections and non-healing wounds. There is a busy office infusion center and active clinical trials. The practice offers a two year track to partnership with no buy-in. Lawrence Corey has been named the next president and director of The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, beginning January 1, 2011. Judd Walson and his group received official notification last week that they were approved for a NIH Clinical Loan Repayment Program which includes 2 years of funding. Geoff Gottlieb was awarded the Fialkow Scholar Award for 2010 from Department of Medicine. This award is designated for an outstanding Assistant Professor in recognition of a combination of high quality research, teaching, clinical and academic citizenship. The Fialkow Scholar is also expected to give a Grand Rounds presentation about an area of personal scholarly interest sometime in the late Fall (likely Oct 28th). September 2010, AID Newsletter Page 6
