Project Name Country Project region Initial Situation Kosana Kosovo Prishtina According to the data collected for the year of 2013, the number of patients who got accepted for infectious disease in Kosovo during 2013 was 2329. A higher proportion of them was admitted during summer months. The largest percentage of patients is hospitalized for a few days, but there are also patients who get hospitalized for more than 10 days for example (10% of them). The infectious diseases that prevail are Gastroenterocolitis acuta (14.1%), Bronchopneumonia (11%), Intoxicatio Alimentaris (10.9%), and Ictus Ixodes (3.2%). The findings from 2013, collected within frames of KoSANA project, confirm a relatively high number of patients with infectious diseases. Such confrontation with disease incidence requires a health care system that is equipped with well informed and well educated human resources and financial means that support staff and institutions to deal with such situation. In 2011, The Ministry of Health took the initiative to move the reform in healthcare financing forward by introducing a health insurance plan. This has been the most concrete attempt to seriously address the malaise of health care in Kosovo to date. The proposed plan would collect funds from both government and individuals. A central authority independent from the Ministry of Health would manage the funds, and in due course, the funds would ensure a basic care package for the entire population. This reform has progressed and preparations for implementation of the law are underway. An important aspect of this reform will relate to the place (they will take) and support (they will receive) of institutions that deal with infectious disease cases.
