The “Vette Set” Newsletter July Fisherman’s Grotto has been a Club favorite for many years, and is located right on Charleston Bay adjacent to the bridge. 2015 Top Hat Awards May-June The owner, Davine Evanu, started her career as the daughter of the owner of the fishing vessel pictured above. The restaurant has been featuring fresh catch local seafoods since they opened. As one of the clubs first sponsors, we enjoy holding events here where the service is great and the fresh seafood is just wonderful. The Top Hat Award for May went to Darrell King for planning and organizing the Celebration of Life for our friend Pete Devereax, which was held at Sunset Bay Park, where we were joined by Pete’s friends from the Chevy Club along with Pete’s family members and other friends. The Top Hat Award for June was given to Sandi Donnelly for organizing and leading our clubs participation in the Reedsport Memorial Day Parade. Sponsor Recognition The Pacific Coast Corvette Club recognized our long time sponsor Fisherman’s Grotto with a certificate of appreciation that was presented to Davine Evanu by Club President David O’Donnell and Vice President Darrell King. 1 Chainsaw Festival Corvette Show and Shine This year our club dominated the car show people’s choice awards with the Aasen’s Night Race Blue C7 convertible taking the silver medal The club was well represented at the event, and as usual, Ed and Dean had their Corvettes polished and groomed to a “T”. and trophy and the O’Donnell’s Lime Rock Green convertible taking the bronze. If we’d just had our Arctic White C7 convertible along for the event I’m certain we would have scored a perfect trifecta sweep! We started the day by supporting the Reedsport Fire Department at their annual Fireman’s Breakfast. The club again scored as the Granby’s won the Fireman’s 50/50. We were very pleased that PCCC member Norm Bloom from Goldendale Washington was able to join us for the event and get to know his fellow club members. Norm has spent his career with the Corp of Engineers, and has served on board the Yaquina, which is a frequent visitor to Coos Bay. We’re not certain whether Jack or Roberta paid for the tickets, but we do have graphic evidence of who got the loot. 2 Norm Bloom The PCCC dominated both sides of the car show lot and made an excellent showing. As always, when you have a festive atmosphere, some kind of scandal is sure to break out. And this event was no exception! This reporter was shocked to witness Smokey and Sandi catching Mike with his arm around Ranger Jill! Across the street at the carving event, we were all impressed by how far the level of artistry has risen and we were all pleased to see many new faces represented in the competition. But all ended well after a few rounds of burgers and donuts at the Sugar Shack. 3 We had a great time and enjoyed our friends that went along with us. 12th Corvettes at Lake Tahoe Our club was well represented at the Participant’s Choice Car Show and Events at Lake Tahoe. PCCC attendees were: Ed and Pat Nielsen, Dan and Janet Rubin, and Lou and Mattie Lane. The car show was held in the parking lot of the beautiful MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa in Stateline Nevada. There were 196 cars; including 36 C-7s and over 50 C-5s! Ed Nielsen brought home the bacon for the club by taking third place in C-5 class. Ed and Pat want to invite everyone to come along next year. They put on a great show! Pat reported that he was really surprised to win because there were so many great cars in the class. A 6ft by 8ft wide projector screen showed pictures of all the winners of each class and pictures of cars doing various other events during the three days of the event. The group reported that it was a great show and the banquet was excellent. 4 Covered Bridges Run We started the day with a breakfast, “that can’t be beat”, at Leona's in Reedsport. We met up with additional club members along the way and made our first official stop in Lowell. Our next destination was the Unity Bridge, where Jerry risked life and limb to catch photos of the entourage driving through the bridge. We educated ourselves on Oregon History and the finer points of civil engineering at the interpretive center inside the bridge. We really knew why the traffic was so light coming from the coast, as the thermometer moved well up into the high 90s by eleven. We stopped for, and lingered long, over an excellent lunch in air-conditioned splendor at the Sunrise Cafe in Pleasant Hill. The steads we rode in on And, not to be outdone by Hugh Hefner, our own “girls of the covered bridges tour”! The usual suspects enjoying a bit of shade and a cool drink before hitting the road. 5 After lunch we will traveled back to the Cottage Grove area, which is “The Covered Bridge Capital of Oregon”, where we visited or toured 7 more bridges. While walking the Currin Bridge on the Row River we received a first hand understanding of why our forbearers valued these timber bridges so highly that they built houses over them. On each side of the span were timbers so long and large that it is hard to imagine moving them even with modern equipment. At 3:23 PM, with the thermometer hovering around 102 degrees and a fair amount of humidity we stopped at a fast food along I-5 for a cold drink and a break. Upon leaving and returning to the coast, the diehard “the top must be down unless it is pouring“ crowd finally relented, put the tops up, and cranked up the AC. The last bridge we drove was the Dorena, which was also on the Row River. Our final stop was at the Florence Three Rivers Casino for dinner. 6 Pete’s Brick at Dewett Memorial Pete Deveraux’s Memorial Brick has been placed at the Dewett. It is located right next to the clubs brick. These photos don’t do the bricks justice (the recent coat of sealer is too shiny for the camera), as they look very nice to the eye. Sunshine Report Happy Birthday in July Debra Heide Kathy Olbekson Linda Bentley Sandy Eichenlaub July 3rd July 10th July 25th July 28th Wellness report No update on Rick Flowers, although club members have reported seeing Rick on the road! Jim Quinn has been back in the shop for a retrofit at North Bend Hospital - the club sent a bear to ICU as flowers are not allowed, and also sent a card home with our best wishes. For the Good of the Club Sponsors Billings have gone out to all of the sponsors that we have listed on our website. Follow up is in progress and we will have an update at the July meeting. Those who asked for them received their customized sponsor thank you cards. We will have another stack of generic cards at the July meeting Gift Baskets & Raffle Prizes I know Ed set a very high water mark a couple of years ago with the firearm he brought in for the raffle, but that is no excuse to wimp out. All of the gift baskets in the past have been great and very creative, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to make a contribution. Janell, Frank, Jim, and Cherie have already made contributions. 7
