Business Ethics BADM 557 Business Ethics was an on-campus course and was taught by Dr. Dykstra. Some of the key areas of study within this course are the ethical implications of decisions, corporate responsibility, ethical terminology, and ethical systems in American Business. Through readings, class discussions and a variety of projects, this course taught me how to apply course content to unethical situations and to find a solution. BADM 557 course fulfills multiple program objectives and it fits into my Human Resource Management discipline for a variety of reasons. First, the course examined a plethora of unethical activity in business settings. One of the main components of the course was to learn about an unethical situation and then form an opinion. This forced the students to think independently and take a stance on what we believed in. This was followed by more learning and discussion regarding how the unethical situation would be viewed from a legal standpoint and how the various ethical principles would apply. The next way this course added to my HRM discipline was our group research paper, which I have included in my portfolio. This project required our group to research a recent SCOTUS case and make an ethical analysis of the ruling. I found this project very beneficial because I was able to gain a better understanding of how the Supreme Court operates and I learned how to apply ethics to legal issues. As a potential future Human Resource professional, having an understanding of the various ethical and unethical situations that exist is a very valuable tool and being able to articulate the legality of certain issues, along with my personal beliefs, will be vital.
