APPLICATION PROCESS
To be eligible for a residency position you must be a:
Graduate of or candidate for graduation from a medical school in the
United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on
Medical Education (LCME), or
Graduate of or candidate for graduation from a college of osteopathic
medicine in the United States accredited by the American
Osteopathic Association (AOA), or
Graduate of a medical school outside the United States and Canada who
has:
Received a currently valid certificate from the Educational
Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or
A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S.
licensing jurisdiction, or
Graduated from a medical school outside the United States and
successfully completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by
an LCME-accredited medical school.
(For applicants who have already graduated from medical school, eligible
applicants must have graduated from medical school within twentyseven months of their potential residency start date).
To be eligible for an interview for an R-1 position:
Submit a complete application through the Electronic Residency
Application Service (ERAS). Applications must be submitted by
November 1st. We participate in the National Residency Matching
Program (for all ACGME-accredited programs) and the AOA
Intern/Resident Registration Program (for AOA-accredited
programs).
Pass USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1. A minimum score of 75 (2 digit)
and 400 (3 digit) is required for COMLEX 1. Minimum passing
scores on the USMLE vary from year to year, but are usually
around 188.
Avoid failing more than one exam. Students who fail more than one test
will not meet criteria. For example, if a student failed USMLE 1
twice or failed USMLE 1 and 2 each on the first try, the student
would not meet criteria.
Submit Medical School transcripts with grades equivalent to a grade point
average of 2.5. Applicants who fail 3 or more classes or repeat a
semester for academic reasons will not be eligible. Applicants who
are in a probationary status will not be eligible. Applicants who fail
1 or 2 classes and also fail USMLE 1 or COMLEX 1 on the first
attempt will not be eligible.
To be eligible for an interview for an R-2 position (if a slot is available):
Successfully complete, or be in a position to successfully complete, an
ACGME or AOA approved internship.
Provide a letter of good standing from the program director of the
internship, a Medical School Transcript, a Dean’s letter, and three
current letters of recommendation.
Send USMLE Step 1 and 2 or COMLEX Level 1 and 2 scores. (Some
applicants should have part 3 scores). Applicants who failed the
board exams more than once, failed the part 3 exam once, or did
not receive a positive recommendation from the current program
director will not be eligible for an interview.
Resident Selection is based on:
Academic excellence as reflected by:
Positive letters of recommendation and a favorable Dean’s letter
Scores on the USMLE/COMLEX. Applicants for R-1 slots who
have not passed parts 1 and 2 will not be ranked in the
Match.
Medical School transcripts and class rank (Some schools do not
give class rank.)
Excellent performance on a rotation at this institution
Commendations for academic excellence by the residency faculty
or other SSM physicians who have worked with the applicant
Letters of Recommendation
Personal Statement
Commitment to the philosophy of family medicine. We look for students
who embrace the concept of providing continuous, competent, and
comprehensive care to men and women of all ages. Letters of
reference from primary care physicians or a history of practicing
and/or training in a primary care/family medicine environment could
provide evidence of the applicant’s interest in family medicine.
