Roleystone Netball Club Team Selection Policy
Aim
Roleystone Netball Club is committed to providing our members with the opportunity to play
netball in friendly and competitive teams. Actively cultivating team bonding plus post-season
coaches’ reports which form a paper grading process are the means by which we aim to achieve
this objective for our junior players.
The aim of the process is to ensure all players are placed in a team that will:
a) Best represent their level of skill and ability
b) Maximise opportunities to develop and improve their skills
c) Maximise their enjoyment and love of the game
This policy provides a framework that can be followed by the netball committee in forming
teams each year. This document is also a guide for players and parents so that they can be
better informed on the process and the level of involvement and strategic thought that goes
into forming teams at the start of each season.
Players and parents need to understand that placement in a team one year does not ensure
they will remain together the following year. Due to changes in the number of players registered
with the Club, experienced players coming from other teams/clubs and the rates of
development of players from season to season, player movements in and out of teams does
occur. We encourage parents and players to be reasonable in their expectations and encourage
positive feedback so that children will be happy in the teams in which they are ultimately
placed.
Team Selection Process
Net Set Go (up to 10 years old)
Players in Net Set Go: At this level a request to play with friends will usually be accommodated if
numbers allow. Such requests can be made during Club registration.
Teams will be formed by the Registrar in consultation with all the coaches’ reports from the previous
season, but mostly based on the age of the players and previous experience
Junior players (11 to 17 years old)
When placing Junior players in teams, teams will be constructed based on their coach’s report from
previous season, numbers of registrations and take into account, where possible, the need to ensure a
balance of shooters, defenders and centre court players in each team.
It is the club’s aim to have everyone play in an appropriate age group, however some players may
need to play in a slightly older / younger age group depending on numbers and their previous year’s
coach’s feedback regarding the level at which a player is most likely to have the best netballing
experience .

Process for forming teams
Each year, Roleystone Netball Club will follow the processes outlined in this document for all
teams. By doing so, RNC will ensure that it is completed in a fair and equitable manner.
There are several criteria on which players are allocated to a team and these are listed on the
coach’s report and will be the basis for discussion at any meeting called by the registrar or
Coaching Co-ordinator when issues arise.
Any special requests can be made at the time of club registration. These will be considered by
the registrar when teams are being formed.
1. Coach’s Report
At the completion of the winter competition, the coaches will submit their team/player report.
This report looks at a player’s general skill level (passing, footwork, breaking, defending), their
commitment, attitude, fitness* and whether they were playing at an appropriate level that
season.
2. Paper ‘Grading’
The Registrar will review the coaches’ reports and the registration forms of new players to select
initial draft teams once registrations are in. There is no guarantee that the player will play in the
same team as last season but requests will be taken into account where possible.
During the process, the Registrar will work with the Coaching Co-ordinator to created balanced
teams and ensure coaches and the committee are consulted should any issues arise or there are
any questions regarding individual players and/or teams.
The process also involves consideration of the divisions in which the teams are likely to be
placed and the number of coaches available.
3. First Training Day – Mid to late March
All players – but especially new players - should attend the first training day (date as advised by
their coach.) Ideally teams from similar divisions / ages will hold these sessions at the same
time to allow for game play and a better chance for coaches to assess skills and compatibility.
Any player who is absent from the first session for their team is required to notify the coach
prior to the day.
New players will be assessed on the criteria listed above* and then moved if they aren’t the
right fit for the team they have been initially placed in, assuming there is room for movement.
Although unlikely, this can apply to other players too where changes are requested or need to
be made for valid reasons.
4. Final Team Selection
After the first training day sessions have been completed for all age groups, the Coaching Coordinator will request feedback from all coaches plus any other committee member or parent /
player who has relevant information or concerns. All this information will be passed on to the
registrar who will finalise teams and distribute lists.**
Announcement of teams
Players will be advised if there have been any changes to their initial team placement via email.

Disputes
If a family considers that their child has been unfairly treated in the team allocation process they
must submit their concern in writing via email to the Coaching Co-ordinator who will work with
all relevant parties and the Registrar to try to resolve the issue. The emailed concern should be
sent within 72 hours of receiving notification of teams. If the matter cannot be resolved at this
stage it will be brought before the Committee who will reconvene to consider the complaint and
will advise the family of their decision at their earliest convenience.
Confidentiality
All coach’s reports and Committee discussions about teams and players are strictly confidential.
Parents and guardians should not approach Committee members for information.
**Please note that we can only work with the information and numbers we have and ultimately
the registrar will advise the committee if player movement and particular configurations are
possible
