OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Course objectives and learning outcomes identify the knowledge and understanding, skills, and
values and attitudes that are fundamental to a course. List the objectives of the course and the
outcomes that students are expected to achieve by completing it.
TIPS for completing the objectives and learning outcomes:
o Objectives provide specific statements of the intent of the course and direction for the
teaching and learning process – they should link to the rationale.
o Outcomes describe what the students should know, understand and be able to do as a result
of effective teaching and learning of this course – they would normally start with words such
as identifies, describes, applies, develops, etc.
o You should include two or three outcomes for each objective.
o As a guide a typical HSC Board Developed Course (120 hours) would have 4–6 objectives and
5–15 outcomes.
o Here is a sample objective and related learning outcomes for a ‘Computer Science’ course:
Objectives
Learning outcomes
Students will develop:
A student:
1
knowledge and understanding
of abstract data structures and
algorithms
1.1
differentiates between a variety of abstract data
structures in terms of their appropriate use
1.2
designs appropriate abstract data structures as
part of the solution to a problem
1.3
constructs software solutions based on wellstructured algorithms and appropriate data
structures.
Complete the table on the following page that lists your course objectives and related learning
outcomes.
