Diary Entry
Directions:
Apply the information read in class and write a diary entry of what a day in the life of Stanley
Yelnats and/or Zero would be like; and if they could write explain the details they would describe
about that day. Be sure to include detail, personality, and description of the events that occur and
the people around them. Minimum length of diary entry is 4 full paragraphs. One diary entry will
represent the group so make sure ALL group members participate. Be creative!!!
Rubric is as follows:
4 – The diary entry has no grammatical, technical or spelling errors, (ex, fragments, run-on
sentences, misspelled words) and is neat. The entry fulfilled the length (4 paragraph requirement)
AND has extra details beyond 2 paragraphs.
3- The diary entry has 1-2 grammatical, technical and/or spelling errors and fulfilled the 4
paragraph requirement.
2 – The diary entry has several errors including grammatical, technical, spelling and fulfilled the
4 paragraph requirement.
1 – The diary entry has many errors and did not fulfill the 4 paragraph requirement.
0 – Did not complete the diary entry assignment.

Reading and Its’ Importance
Directions:
Examine and write why Zero’s learning to read is connected to achieving freedom. Discuss your
writing in a small group. Examine the question: Why was Zero’s learning to read very essential
to the outcome of the film? Explain and use details from the film and discussions in class. Each
group member will write a paragraph answering the question above and then combine their work
on one final copy and should be a total of 4 – 5 paragraphs (everyone’s paragraph combined).
Neatness is a must!

Expression through Song
Directions:
Write a song the boys of Camp Green Lake may have sung to get through long days digging
holes. Include at least one of each figurative language such as metaphors, alliterations,
personification, and repetition. Make sure the song is appropriate and please be creative
(presentation, costuming, music etc). Song must be at least 3 verses having 8 lines each
(refer to poetry notes).
Rubric is as follows:
4 – The song and presentation fulfilled all above requirements and were creative.
3- The song and presentation fulfilled requirements but lacked creativity (costuming, music etc)
2 – The song lacked figurative language and only followed SOME requirements.
1 – The song did not follow any of the guidelines and requirements
0 – Did not complete the assignment.

Grueling Schedule
Directions:
Create a chart in the day of the life of Stanley Yelnats. The chart should show their activities from
the time they wake up until the time they may have been allowed to sleep. Include duties, time
for hygiene, meals and breaks if any etc. Then write an accurate explanation (1 paragraph
minimum and can be attached to chart or separate) of why the details in your chart are included,
using information from the film and discussions held in class.
Rubric is as follows:
4 – The chart and explanation is free of grammatical, technical, spelling errors and is neat. The
explanation answers all questions mentioned in the directions accurately. The explanation used
examples from sources used in class. The chart was creatively written and/or drawn.
3 - The chart and explanation had 1-2 errors but was neat. The explanation answers all questions
mentioned accurately. The explanation used examples from reading sources used in class. The
chart was creatively written and/or drawn.
2 - The chart and explanation had several errors. Did not use examples from reading sources
used in class. Chart was completed.
1 – There were many errors and explanation was inaccurate and used no examples from reading
sources used in class.
0 – The assignment was incomplete, inaccurate and/or sloppy.
