Purpose of the Post
To provide support within the Science department with basic science preparation and
intervention with students.
Duties and Responsibilities

To prepare resources/equipment for teaching, including making up chemicals as directed
by senior technician.
To support learning activities where additional adult support would benefit the class.
To undertake where appropriate routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment,
resources and materials to ensure a safe and orderly working environment.
To clean the equipment/resources/work area after use including chemical/biological
spillages in accordance with COSHH.
Carry out routine and repairs maintenance as required.
To check equipment/resources for safety, reporting any faults/problems/damages to
senior technician.
To ensure laboratory equipment is moved and stored safely and securely as instructed in
line with Health and Safety regulations.
To be responsible for ensuring that chemicals and biological waste are disposed of safely,
in accordance with the safe practices of CLEAPSS.
To drive the mini bus on science enrichment opportunities off site.
Provision of practical requirements
10. Preparing apparatus, materials and solutions and setting up/checking/issuing equipment
and apparatus for use in practical activities. Setting up demonstrations, retrieving and
clearing away apparatus etc.
11. Constructing and modifying apparatus. Co-operating with teaching staff in the
development of apparatus and equipment for use in practical activities.
12. Disposal of waste laboratory materials in accordance with guidelines/health and safety
requirements.
13. To provide support for learning activities on occasions where demonstrations of technical
apparatus would benefit from additional adult support.
Other responsibilities.
14. Act as First Aider for students as and when required.
15. Participate in all aspects of training and development.
16. Comply with the Council’s/ College’s Health and Safety Policy and associated safe
working procedures and guidelines.
17. Communicate the Health and Safety Policy, procedures and guidelines to all employees
under the management/supervision of the post-holder. Monitor compliance with the policy,
procedures and guidelines and keep appropriate records where required.
18. Comply with the Council’s/College’s Comprehensive Equality Policy and ensure that it is
implemented within the service area and amongst employees within the remit of the post.
19. Be responsible for the implementation of the Council’s Human Resource policies and
procedures including Employee Relations, within the remit of the post.
20. Comply with the Council’s Data Protection Policy and Code of Practice within the service
area and amongst employees within the remit of the post.
21. To undertake any such duties reasonably commensurate with the level of this post.
