Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) Del Mar College (DMC) Chapter Thursday, October 13, 2011, Harvin Student Center, Conference Room 1 MINUTES CALL TO ORDER Maria Salinas, TACHE President, called the meeting to order at 1:34 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Members viewed and approved the September 2011 minutes with the following corrections: That it be noted under Vice President’s Report, a card was sent to Ben Morin. MOTION 10.1 (Benita Flores/Dr. Eva Muñiz): To approve the September 2011 minutes as presented. Motion carried. PRESIDENTS REPORT TACHE President’s report-Maria Salinas Dr. Maria Salinas,TACHE President provided the following reports: Bylaws Meeting:Dr. Salinas reported that the meeting is set for Friday October 14th in CB-238. Purpose of the meeting will be to adjust the current TACHE Del Mar Chapter bylaws. All officers are urged to attend. Dr. Salinas reported that she contacted a student who had not utilized herentire TACHE book scholarship for the 2011 Fall Semester. She determined that the student intended to use the remaining balance during the 2012 spring semester. All other book scholarships were utilized by the recipients. Membership Promotion, Students/ Community: Goal for this year is set at 80 members. Adjustments to the bylaws allowing the community to become paid members can help to increaseTACHE membership. Holiday Cards: Dr. Salinas suggested thanking past TACHE members with holiday cards. Dia De Los Muertos/Loteria: Dr. Salinas reported that Loteria will be held from 1-2 pm. An altar in honor of Dia De Los Muertos to be included in the festivities. An article in theFog Horn newspaper will encourage students to give offertory gifts to deceased loved ones.Possible giveaways will be flash drives and TACHE T-shirts. OFFICER’S REPORT Vice President’s Report Dr. Irma Woods-Vice President Dr. Woods reported that a card was sent on behalf of TACHE, congratulating Carla Gamez and her husband on the birth of their baby. Secretary’s Report Mary Jane Tejeda provided a flyer meant to promote student and community membership. Members agreed to consider moving forward once bylaws have been updated. If approved, flyers will be posted around campus and or sent electronically via email to students.Further discussion will be held at the next meeting. TACHE Minutes of October 13, 2011 Membership Coordinator’s Report Dr. Eva Muñizreported that as of 10/13/2011, TACHE Del Mar Chapter still has 45 members paid through 8/31/2012. ($10) Copper—5 ($15) Bronze—25 ($25) Silver—9 ($30 from 1, $50 from 2) Silver to Gold—3 ($75) Gold—0 ($100) Platinum—3 Welcome 13 new members, Mary Bustamante, Dr. Norman Kent Gillen. DonaldK. Natale, Silbestre Porras, Verna D. Roper, Sonia Soliz, Irma Bomer, Patricia Benavidez-Dominguez, Jessica Alaniz, Alan Clark, Dr. Jonda Halcomb, Mary Cantu, Sandra Valerio The total amount of dues collected to date is $1,065, not including E. Flores’ dues because she paid last year. TACHE State President’s Report Dr. Criselda Leal-TACHE State President Dr. Leal reported that the TACHE state conference will be held February 1st-4th. She proposed that this year TACHE Del Mar set its focus on encouraging students to attend the state conference. Members discussed the possibility of providing funds which would allow a select number of students to attend. Further discussion is needed. Checking accounts must have a select number of debits per month. Leticia also reported that Dr. Salinas approved the consolidation of accounts. Members agreed that money should be transferred to benefit a student deciding to major in the Mexican American Studies program. MOTION 10.2 (Dr. Muñiz/Dr.Woods):Motion to approve the transfer of $500.00 from the Savings account to thescholarship for the Mexican American Studies Program,spring semester.Motion Carried. OLD BUSINESS Membership Appreciation Dinner-Dr. Eva Muñiz The Annual Membership Appreciation Dinner will be held at The Village Café (previously called A Place to Be), 920 Louisiana, on Friday, 10/26.11, at 6 p.m. Chicken fried steak dinners and salad will be served. Paid members will receive their dinner free; guests are asked to prepay $15 by Friday, 10/14/11. Mary Helen Berlanga will speak about her experiences with the Texas State Board of Education. Photo Albums-Dr.Criselda Leal Dr. Leal reported that each album cost $19.95 plus tax at CVS. The total cost of TACHE albumsamounted to $80.00. She motioned thattwo more photo albums be approved. MOTION 10.3 (Dr. Leal/Benita Flores): To approve funds for two more TACHE photo albums. Motion Carried. GI Forum Ad-Dr. Maria Salinas Dr. Salinas reported that she has not received a response from Mr. Estrada, nor did she receive an invoice for the ad. She stated that although college relations provided a draft for the ad, it may have not have been published. Further investigation into this matter is needed and an update will be provided at the next meeting. Mexican American Studies Support-Dr. Eva Muñiz Dr. Muñiz reported that a meeting with Dr. Halcomb to discuss updates for Mexican American Studies will be held on October 14that 8:00 am. Dr. Muñiz stated that the TACHE spring scholarship needs to be promoted to students interested in pursuing this degree. Dr. Leal suggested adding an icon for the Mexican American studies program on the TACHE website. -3- TACHE Minutes of October 13, 2011 Silent Auction-Dr. Maria Salinas Dr. Salinas called upon members to volunteer for the Silent Auction committee. Various duties such as, placing sheets and setting up items will be assigned at a committee meeting. Committee members will also decide what kinds of items will be auctioned off. Possible items: baked goods, desserts, and gift baskets. Members discussed the creation of electronic flyer to promote the event. Silent Auction will be held November 22, 2011 from 9:00-3:00 pm in CB 134. Holiday Social Dr. Salinas suggested that instead of a having a holiday social, TACHE participate in community projects. Dr. Muñiz suggested having another Casino night, and charging as a fundraiser. Possible entertainment will be an Elvis impersonator. Adam, a student member suggested the 600 building as a possible location for the fundraiser. The building has a large room with large tables, and kitchen. In addition, the building provides guests with security. Members agreed that Dr. Muñiz work with Adam together in carrying out plans for the Holiday Social. NEW BUSINESS Installation of Officers Members agreed to have a ceremony during the first few minutes of the Appreciation Dinner. In addition, TACHE will bid farewell to past members. Dr. Salinas will also welcome guests and talk about the TACHE Mission statement. Community Service Cesar Chavez Walk Dr. Woods reported that the Cesar Chavez walk is scheduled for the end of March.As the date approaches, an email will be sent to remind members of the event. All members are urged to participate. Feast of Sharing Event will be held on Christmas Eve. Members discussed whether or not TACHE will participate due to members not being available. Further discussion is needed. ANNOUNCEMENT Dr. Salinas discussed inviting guest speakers to TACHE meetings. Dr. Leal suggested that someone maintain a TACHE Facebook page. Dr. Salinas will contact Anna Tischler, former Treasurer and keeper of the webpage to keep page current. In addition members discussed appointing either Benita Flores or a journalism student to deal with media. ADJOURNMENT MOTION 10.4 (Leticia Clark/Dr. Eva Muñiz) Motion to adjourn.
