NOTICE RE: GRADUATE ASSISTANT (GA) POSITIONS AVAILABLE FOR

Fall Term 2015

In accordance with Article 12:01 of the CUPE 4580 Collective Agreement the Faculty of Arts,

Humanities, and Social Sciences invites applications for GA positions in the Fall 2015 term. The

Dean’s Office projected GA Funding Allocation for 2015-2016 is 208,000. The specific number of

GA hours assigned to each section is based on enrolment.

The following course may utilize a Graduate Assistant for Fall 2015:

GA Duties:

Assist in teaching scheduled classes

Assisting students during office hours (2 hours per week)

Marking assignments and exams

Managing a team of Teaching Assistants

Eligibility Requirements:

GA appointments shall be offered in accordance with the criteria specified in Article 12:03 of the Collective Agreement. Note that a student must maintain fulltime registration throughout the term and must be in good standing in the degree program in order to hold a Graduate

Assistantship. A full Graduate Assistantship requires an average of 10 hours per week for a maximum of 140 hours per semester. Refer to Articles 12, 13, and 14 of the CUPE 4580

Collective Agreement for eligibility details. Graduate Assistants must apply each term by the application deadline, in accordance with Article 13. With respect to those students who have applied for and been accepted for Assistantships, the Assistant will not be paid for any shortfall of hours at the end of their respective program, provided the University has satisfied its obligation to post available positions each term in writing and on the AAU website and to offer

the minimum terms of support in accordance with Article 13:01(a) & (b) and provided that the

Assistant has applied in writing or via e-mail by the application deadline for each term until they have received the minimum terms of support in accordance with Article 13:01 (a) and (b).

In addition, the following are specific criteria required for the appointments above:

 A minimum major average of 70% (B-) and a cumulative average of 60% (C-) is required

 Preference will be given to applicants who have o Experience as a student and/or teaching assistant in 01-400/02-400 o Strong working understanding of the structure and operation of the Faculty of

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Mentor Program o Demonstrated experience in mentorship and leadership contexts o Excellent interpersonal skills, including good judgement, diplomacy and tact o Demonstrated organisational and administrative skills, including a proven ability to work as a team member or independently as required

 Interviews may be conducted
