Operations and Supply Chain Management Projects Graduate Assistant
Term:
This position is for a full time (20 hours per week) assistantship available to a full time graduate student. The
assistantship is for a one academic year. It will award a stipend of $8,000 per academic year ($4,000 per semester)
and a tuition waiver for up to 9 credits per semester, not to exceed 18 credits for the academic year (Fall/Winter).
Responsibilities:
 Formulate or model statistical/optimization models for three papers which are already in considerably
advanced state of research.
 Assist in the literature search and summarize relevant articles for inclusion as appropriate;
 Assist with new and on-going research activities undertaken by the primary supervisor
 Help with Excel-based HWs grading on as-needed basis when research load is a little sparse.
Qualifications:
 Admission to any graduate degree program at Grand Valley State University;
 Strong research and statistical analysis skills, especially the ability to understand properties of various
distributions such as Normal, Poisson, exponential; compute and interpret data;
 Deep knowledge of Excel; random number generation and evaluating time performance of algorithms
 Running simulation using Excel or in any other software available at GV
 Strong candidates will be easy-going and good natured, able to prioritize work, be detail orientated,
efficiently meet internal deadlines, and demonstrate an acceptable level of independence and reliability
when executing assigned tasks.
Work Station:
The graduate assistant will work from a open space adjacent to one faculty offices on the downtown campus.
Within this space, they will have a dedicated laptop available (to be confirmed).
Orientation:
A brief orientation will be given at the start of the appointment by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Dept of Management -the
primary supervisor. This will primarily cover the expectations of the student, in terms of time commitment to the
position, outside employment, and professional standards. An informal orientation will be on-going as needed.
Supervision:
The graduate assistant will report to Prof Ashok Kumar, Assistant Professor of Marketing. He/she will be given
performance guidance at least once a week and will be reviewed at least once a month.
