Parson’s Peace,
Another year has gone and we have a new one starting. For some
it is the start of New Year resolutions (mine is to exercise more
and loose some weight). For others, it may highlight that last
years issues are still with us and another daunting year is starting.
Carol, Ellen and I watched a film in the run up to Christmas called
“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. An ensemble of retired Brits
leave the UK to go to a hotel in India where they will live out the
rest of their days. For some it was to be a final adventure, for
others it was a necessity, to eek out their pensions. It was a
stellar cast with Maggie Smith as the cantankerous odd one out,
only going to have a cheep hip operation and then to recuperate
in this very run down, but charming hotel. Needless to say, she
was not at all happy at all the change and uncertainty that was
involved.
Judi Dench’s character speaking as the narrator, talks of the
enormous assault on the senses in Jaipur. She reasons that if you
try and hold on to everything that is familiar and fixed, then you
will be drowned in a tidal wave of new overwhelming
experiences. However, if you allow yourself to be swept along
with the current of life in India, then you will have a fair chance of
not only surviving, but of being invigorated by this newness and
difference.
Life in West Wales is not altogether different from that. Change happens increasingly quickly,
and as we grow older our capacity to handle that change often feels diminished. As that film
highlighted, it is often our reluctance to experience the riches of the new and our desire to
resit change that we find ourselves overpowered by life, rather than engaged and invigorated
by it.
Jesus brought new life into this world through enormous change, disruption and challenge
wherever he was. But that change was all based on the Lord’s own revelation of himself, and
his truth and love and justice in relationship.

In this coming year, no doubt we will be faced with new challenges and changes as we work to
bring the Good News of Jesus into our communities. St David’s Church, Talybont will be
starting a new midweek evening service to enable those who cannot meet on Sunday
mornings to come together and worship. The first one will be on Thu. 21st Jan at 7:00pm and
afterwards they will be on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. The services will feel more contemporary
with topic based talks. Alternating with that, Dave and Anne Poole will be holding a Fellowship
Group in their house for anyone who wishes to attend.
Let us pray that this new service will be blessed and be a blessing to all who attend.
A new venture for a new year. And I wish you all a truly wonderful and life affirming 2016.
Yours in Christ
Peter

Operation Christmas Child
In 2015 our three churches again prepared a number of shoe boxes.
On 18 December, on Radio Wales, Jason Mohammed interviewed Dai Hughes, who co-founded
OCC in Wrexham 25 years ago. Dai said:
'there was one young lad in one of the early trips, scraggy, filthy, he was aged about 10. He
opened his box, looked inside, he took out every single item in all, in silence, he kissed them,
then he replaced them all back in the box, put the lid on, held the box tight to his chest,
collapsed against a wall and broke into tears. And we saw that so many times, it was
unbelievable'
This story shows the impact that these boxes have on poor children around the world, who
otherwise would receive nothing at Christmas. None of our boxes just had stuff 'shoved' in but
each was filled with all different items, love showing through the care in which items are
chosen which will be useful or fun for a child. Each child receiving a box will also receive that
thought and care. I think this could impact their whole lives.
In making up these boxes, we are, in a small way, reflecting God's ultimate gift of His son.
Thank you to everyone in our three churches. We all gave in some way to this project, through
gifts, money and prayer. May God bless us all in 2016.
