Strong Learning Foundation, High Expectations and Achievements

. Bilingual Teachers.

Parents and Partnership

Continue to encourage parents to use Samoan at home.

Tap into the creative talents of our Pasifika community to show their language, customs and arts with our children.

Encourage parents to take a lead in multicultural festival groups and activities.

Keep parents and extended families informed about whom to talk to if they need advice.

Have open nights with parents and teachers to discuss further concerns or celebrate any success.

Put phrases below into the newsletter to promote the use of home language.

Supporting Identity and Culture

Utilize all available resources to give the pupils in the Samoan unit the greatest opportunities to learn and use their language competently.

Having a Samoan Resources Room with provided accessible opportunity for children, teachers and parents to promote Samoan Language and Culture.

Use kitara, pate, and sticks at assembly and on special occasions.

Develop protocols to welcome visitors to special ceremonies.

Add Pasifika flavour to traditional occasions. E.g. Talent Quests, Prize Giving, etc.

In co-operate Pasifika into landscape plans. E.g. choice of plants, fale and symbols.

Continue to reflect Pasifika in school display. E.g. murals, classroom displays, hall displays and Foyer.

Use the DVD of the Multicultural Festivals to positively promote our school.

Include ethnic foods on Family Fun Nights, shared lunches and Samoan week.

The achievement of the learner is paramount. Therefore, just as culture cannot exist without language and language without culture, so too is the learner without surroundings.

PLAN REVIEW BILINGUAL 6-12-2013

Vision: Five out of five Pasifika learners participating, engaging and achieving in education, secure in their identity, languages and cultures and contributing fully to Aotearoa New Zealand’s social, cultural and economic.

Goals

1.Pasifika learners excel in literacy and numeracy and make effective study choices that lead to worthwhile qualifications.

2. Pasifika school leavers are academically and socially equipped to achieve their goals for further education training and/or employment.

3. Pasifika parents families and communities engage with schools in supporting their children’s learning.

Targets

1.By 2017, increase the number of Pasifika Education Language

Services teaching in a Pasifika

Language or culture over 50 percent of the time.

2. The proportion of Pasifika children starting school who have participated in a Bilingual setting will increase to 98 percent in 2017.

3. 85 percent of year 1-10

Pasifika learners will meet literacy and numeracy expectations, including achieving at or above in

National Standards across years

1-8, in 2017

Actions

1.Provide language and learning intervention to support a smooth transition to school for learners coming from Pasifika immersion early childhood centers, and particularly

Pasifika learners that have not participated in early childhood education.

2. Use engagement initiatives such as the Pasifika School

Community Liaison Project to engage with parents families, communities and schools.

3. Increase the Pasifika capability of school Boards of

Trustees utilizing new resources.

Bilingual Education is a method of teaching that aims to assist learners to become Bilingual and

Biliterate. It involves learning opportunities in two languages, usually through first language empowerment Bilingual must be the aim of any Bilingual Education programme and this can only be the outcome when teachers have high levels of pedagogical understanding of methodologies and fluency in both languages of instruction themselves.

Ako – Teaching and learning relationship, teacher is also learning from the student – reciprocal learning, also recognizes that the learner and Whānau can’t be separated AKO incorporates two aspects.

By looking at our graph, we can see some differences between the childrens reading levels.

In which – 19 are reading Above National Standard

– 29 working At National Standard

– 10 working Below National Standard

– 3 working Well Below National Standard

Our Focus for this year is to work with the Below and Well Below children to help achieve their level and hopefully reach their reading expectations
