Year 7 Subject Content Summer Term 2014 Subject Art Biology Chemistry DT: Food Technology DT: Resistant Materials English Content This term Year 7 pupils will explore the visual aspects of the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, developing an understanding of the use of pattern, costume and symbols within this cultural celebration. Pupils will create prints inspired by the work of Jose Posada, and will design and build Day of the Dead style papier-mâché masks. For the first half of this term pupils will continue to learn about classification and variation. They will participate in discussions and investigations, focusing on the ways scientists classify living organisms. They will learn the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. Assessment for this unit will be carried out using a variety of classroom activities and a short end of unit test. The pupils will be examined on all the material covered during the year in the Summer Examination after the half term holiday. Towards the end of the term pupils will investigate the environment and feeding relationships through practical studies. In the first half of term pupils will be continuing the unit about ‘Acids and Alkalis’. They will make their own indicator out of red cabbage. Pupils will learn about neutralisation and explore its uses in more detail. Pupils will be assessed at the end of this unit with a test. After half term, pupils will be developing their investigative skills and thinking skills with a range of practicals. During the Summer Term, pupils will be revisiting the importance of Health and Safety within a Food Technology environment and be encouraged to communicate their design ideas clearly by means of sketching, annotation and presentation. Pupils will plan, make and evaluate how to make a ratatouille and a vegetable tart; this will continue the work from last term where pupils studied the ‘Eatwell’ plate. Pupils will have an introduction to plastic properties and their uses and they will start an acrylic key ring project. Generating ideas for the acrylic key ring project will be with a design constraint of the shape being symmetrical. Pupils will use a coping saw to cut the acrylic, cross and draw filing techniques and the use of wet and dry paper for the cleaning of saw cuts on acrylic will also be taught. There will also be an introduction to Computer Aided Design (CAD) & Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). This term Year 7 will cover informal and formal letter writing and poetry. They will also, as a class, choose a novel to read from the selection available and explore the themes, characters and literary devices used by the author. There will be a summer exam for which pupils will be prepared using comprehension and writing activities Geography History Information Communication Technology Maths Performing Arts Physical Education Physics throughout the term. This term Year 7 will learn about settlement. They will be able to identify the physical and human factors affecting site and situation of settlements, settlement patterns and be able to describe the reasons for counter urbanisation and the depopulation of rural areas. Pupils will also learn about the effects of rapid growth in Lower Income Countries. This term, Year 7 pupils will continue to study the various aspects of Britain after the Norman Conquest which includes the Domesday Book and Feudal System. Pupils will learn about the different aspects of life in medieval England such as crime and punishment and the origins and the development of the Black Death. Assessment for this term will be classroom observation and an end of year examination. This term Year 7 will become magazine editors. They will be introduced to subject specific software in order to develop their own school magazines. They will be required to design it themselves and include an interview of a staff member. The finished product will then be printed and presented to the cohort of year 6s that will be attending The Moat School next year to give them an idea of what The Moat School life is like. This term Year 7 pupils will be studying the Mathematical areas of Algebra, Area, Perimeter, Statistics, Number and Examination revision. The assessment for each unit will include small class tests and an end of year examination in June. During the Summer Term, pupils will develop spontaneous role-play and improvisation skills, whole-group storytelling and image-making, as well as in-role reflection and evaluation. Pupils will revise Elements of Music and Programme Music. We will explore musical styles through a variety of listening examples and practical keyboard work. We will learn basic chords on the keyboard and add simple melody lines to it. We will look at different melodies and learn to create and play simple harmonies. We will also look at the different musical techniques used to create a melody line and what elements can help to create this. During the first half term the pupils will develop their cricket skills. Pupils will be taught the basic rules of cricket and develop their catching, throwing and batting whilst taking part in drills and games. Pupils will be encouraged to use the ‘long barrier’ fielding technique. In the second half term pupils will prepare for the end of year athletics day. Pupils will be taught how to perform a sprint start and then implement this in a 100m race and a 200m race. Pupils will also develop their skills in field events; namely the high jump, long jump and shot put. In the Summer Term pupils will complete the topic on ‘Forces’ where they will examine the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces. Pupils will also learn about friction and how to change the amount of friction, and the advantages and disadvantages of friction in different settings. Pupils will also complete several pieces of Personal, Social & Health Education Religious Education practical work during the course of the term and this will provide an opportunity for the class to develop their investigative skills. This term in Personal Social and Health Education pupils will study topics involving responsibility; responsibility to self, responsibilities in school, rights and responsibilities. Pupils will also look at their friendships with other people and how to resolve personal conflicts. Pupils will also use their Personal Social and Health Education lessons to improve their public speaking skills by preparing for their third Form Gathering which will be presented to the school at the end of the term and they will have the opportunity to reflect on the past year. This term Year 7 pupils will continue to study Judaism. They will focus on learning about the main Jewish beliefs, Jewish temples and festivals such as Passover, Shabbat and the Seasonal Cycle. Pupils will also learn about the Jewish family life and the role of rabbi in the Synagogue. Assessment for this topic will be carried out through classroom observation and activities.
