1. Peter Ginter follow up (Emma)
The press office thanks the experiments for their availability and patience during the recent photo
shoot.
All 2003 high resolution images (85Mb) will be soon available on CDS restricted for free use by
CERN and the experiments (as long as the product is not sold outside of CERN). After Peter
Ginter’s next book is printed, all 2003 images will become openly available on CDS, copyright
CERN at 300dpi for a 13/18 print.
Peter will be back in 2 months or so for his next photo shoot. Before then, a watertight contract will
have been signed to ensure CERN’s and the experiments’ rights to use the new photos. During this
next visit, Peter would like access to the experiments’ control rooms. Both CMS and ATLAS
expressed reluctance to let Peter Ginter into their control rooms during a period of operation,
because of the disruption to work that his visits cause. In the case of ATLAS, access had been
arranged to the control room during his last visit, but he had chosen not to go there.
2. Google Science Fair (Emma)
http://www.google.com/sciencefair - The fair’s slogan, “science connects the world,” is an
appropriate message for CERN and the fair gives an opportunity to connect with one of our target
audiences. Final judging will take place on 11th July and the DG participates.
CERN offers a 3 day visit to the lab: a request will be made to the CCC and to the experiments for
participation on shifts for 1 prize winner and their guardian, in addition to the standard visits.
3. Plans for the inauguration of the new tramline (Corinne)
The inauguration will be on Saturday 30th of April and will concern the line between Jardin alpin to
CERN. CERN will be involved in the fair taking place in Meyrin with stands tackling 4 questions
about the Higgs, dark matter, QGP and antimatter. These questions will be introduced by actors
during the tram journey. The “habillage” of a tram is very expensive, so negotiations are still open
on this point. There was an enthusiastic reaction to the plans and experiments were asked for
names of physicists who could animate the stand.
4. Webcasting and video conferencing (Steve)
The ATLAS Live Public Outreach webcast channel currently consists of cycling AV material about
the experiment. There are plans to schedule the stream and to include regular updates on the
status of the LHC and the experiment. This stream will be advertised to students participating in
video conferences linking their classrooms with the Control Room and the Data Quality Centre at
Point One. Such events are already planned for Japan and Brasil. Joao Pequenao is developing a
system for providing the choice of multiple subtitles in different languages with the webcast stream.
When the system is up and working, Steve would like to pursue the creation of a joint LHC channel,
including content from all interested experiments.
There should be coordination of requests from schools for video-conferencing link to CERN, to
avoid parallel communication routes. Helfried Burckhart to initiate contact between PH-EDU and
Steve.
5. Upcoming engineering events (Emma)
Edinburgh International Science Festival
This year there will be a CERN-organised engineering event at the festival chaired by comedian
Robin Ince. The goal being to underline CERN’s excellence in engineering – not just physics. In
addition, Emma and Gian Giudice will be speaking at an author event.
World Engineer’s Convention 4-9 Sept 2011 www.wec2011.ch
The DG will speak at this conference and there will be CERN visits for delegates. In addition,
Emma is developing content for an exhibition in the Palexpo entrance hall. Although this focuses
on the engineering challenges of the LHC machine, it will also include some of the engineering
challenges for the experiments and Emma will soon be in touch with you to fix the details.
6. IPPOG Discovery packages (Dave)
An IPPOG proposal to group together packages of varied background material in anticipation of
future LHC discoveries. Each packages would include existing material for a variety of audiences
(journalists, teachers…) on a particular theme, such as the Higgs. We should also identify and
develop missing content in advance of discoveries – see table in Dave’s presentation for
suggestions (on indico). There was general agreement that such actions should also form part of
CERN’s new communication plan that will be discussed at the next meeting. The experiments will
be fully consulted for their ideas for this plan.
7. Ideas of content for IPPOG database (Lisa)
The many ideas from the ‘round the table’ will be incorporated into the database by Lisa and the
links circulated to LOG members.
Silvano announced plans for a new interactive game about CERN physics aimed at 12-15 year
olds, which will be developed with a similar approach to Amalthea.
8. News from the experiments and the CCC
LHCb is investigating foreign language editions of its book and the new film has just been released.
CMS puts forward the idea of decorating the walls of building 40 with a large image of the
experiment and requests feedback from ATLAS and whether they would be interested in joining
forces on such a venture.
The LHC is heavily requested for VIP visits underground yet is having to cut down on such visits
now, to avoid delaying LHC start-up.
ATLAS – The ATLAS exhibit travel kit: We are currently printing one 3X3 panel as a model of what
each ATLAS institution could have at their home institutes. The idea is to have a easy to set up
Exhibit Kit in each of the institutes, which could be shown in parallel to the Outreach ATLAS Live
Channel. They had a lot of visits too (from the press office and the VIP office). They have added
new photos on CDS. The Resonance project still producing many media items, including the 30
minutes podcast on the Guardian, which is currently running for an award. http://atlas-musicresonance.web.cern.ch/atlas-music-resonance/ATLAS-media.htm
9. New 3D film (Silvano)
There will be a new 3D introductory film for visitors to CERN. In addition, short clips from the film
will be posted to CDS to make them available for other projects. It will also be possible to use the
clips in presentations about CERN.
General request from the experiments that ideas for new AV projects be aired at LOG prior to start
of filming.
10. The meeting watched the new LHCb film which will soon be present on CDS.
