Town Planner Rubric How will I know how well I did Part 1 – the coordinate graphing map of a realistically sustainable town? Mastery Advancing Progressing Emerging Beginning Limited Science Connections Env. sustainability planning Thoughtful placement decisions & clear reasoning Presents thoughtful and valid reasons that clearly connect to the environment and sustainability Presents reasons for the town plan with some connections to the environment and sustainability Presents few reasons for placement decisions; 0-1 environmental connections Mathematical/Logical thinking Logical size relationships Accurate coordinate graphing and labeling Presentation Skills Professional speaking skills Coordinates are all accurate and the size of buildings is logical Mostly accurate coordinates given for buildings and the size relationship of each building is mostly logical Coordinates do not match with buildings and the size relationship of buildings is illogical Establishes eye contact, easy to hear, clear, and fluent throughout the presentation Establishes eye contact some of the time; easy to hear, clear, and fluent through some of the presentation. Little eye contact; difficult to hear, most of the presentation is unclear Most written conventions are correct and writing is legible Multiple errors in the writing; several parts are messy or unclear Polished written product Perfect written conventions with clear, neat labels How will I know how well I did Part 2 – describing a new environmental world in Explain Everything? Mastery Advancing Progressing Emerging Beginning Science Connections Logical consequences of the new world are thoughtfully presented Presentation Skills Writing Visual Effects Citations Self-Management Skills On task throughout the project 4-5 (or more) specific, logical consequences of the new world are presented The writing clearly explains the ideas. It’s well-organized with perfect use of conventions. Variety of effects make the presentation interesting and enhance the message All sources are cited and included at the end 2-3 logical consequences are given; may be missing an obvious logical consequence Most ideas are clearly explained. The writing has organization and most conventions are correct. Effects are present, but not varied; some may be interesting, but distract from the main message Great use of class time; almost always on task Mostly good use of class time; sometimes off task / distracting other groups Town Planner Project 2015 – 2016 Limited 0-1 logical consequences are given Most ideas are unclear. There is little organization and there are many errors in written conventions. Very few effects; effects are not connected to the message at all No sources are cited Name: Did not use class time wisely to develop this project You are about to design your own town, and consider the needs of both human beings and the plants and animals that share the town’s environment. Your town will be imaginary, but it must be a place that could realistically be in Canada in the present time period (no aliens, dinosaurs, or jungles). Part I: The Map A) Includes at least 10 different man-made structures and at least 5 landforms, including a wetland B) The size of each item makes sense in relation to other items C) Items are placed thoughtfully with regard to sustainability and the needs of humans and other living things D) The map is constructed on graph paper, labeled with coordinates (letters on the horizontal axis, numbers on the vertical) - Attach a separate piece of paper that labels the coordinate pairs of each item on your map For example: (B,6) – Hospital E) You are prepared to speak professionally about your map and your reasoning for each item’s placement Part II: The “What – If” World A) Create an Explain Everything presentation, imagining a world with a new condition, policy, or circumstance. B) Consider the environmental, economic, social, physical, and every-day changes that would result from this new world situation, and show what might happen to people, other living things, as well as landforms and man-made structures. C) This world will be in a not-too-distant future, and it should resemble Earth, but it does not have to be North America. D) You may need to do some research to find out some logical consequences. Be sure to keep track of your sources.
