G-28 News & Events January Curriculum Update New Supplies Dear Parents, Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a restful vacation and enjoyed time with your families. We sure did! We also wanted to thank everyone for all the thoughtful holiday gifts and for all the awesome parents who worked so hard to make our holiday celebration so much fun! We are looking forward to all the fun and exciting things ahead in 2015. Over the next few weeks the children will be taking a trip to the desert as part of our geography/science study. We will be learning about desert animals, plants, and the habitats they live in. Through this unit we will continue our study of plant life adding animal life cycles as well. The children will also have a chance to taste some real cactus jelly YUM! Along with our desert study, we will be honoring Martin Luther King Jr., and begin our biography unit. During this unit the students will read a variety of biographies in class about different heroes. We will study people who have made our lives better and how their contributions affect our lives today. In math, we will continue to add mentally. At the end of December we were adding tens and hundreds to two-digit numbers. This month, we will mentally subtract tens and hundreds. This is all leading to adding and subtracting two-digit numbers with regrouping. Once we are able to fluently add and subtract tens and hundreds, we better understand the strategies necessary when adding two-digit numbers. In writing, will continue with informational writing. Last month we worked on writing non-fiction books that focused on teaching our classmates about a particular plant. This month, we will use the same skills to write about animals. It’s important for students to be able to write about and explain their learning to others. As always, thank you for all your continued support in making G-28 THREE GREATS! To start off the new year we are replacing some of our old school supplies with new ones. To help with this we are asking our families to donate any of the following items below: 1. a new box of 12 count Crayola colored pencils 2. a new box of 24 count Crayola crayons 3. small size glue sticks (6 count) 4. sharpened #2 yellow pencils Warmest regards, Erika Huerta and Amy Schwender AR Goals & Monthly This is an optional donation and we would appreciate any help you could provide with the above items. These materials are for your child and will go directly into their pencil boxes to replace their well used and mostly broken supplies. As for a classroom donation we would greatly appreciate colored copy paper. Our supply is running low. Thank you for all your support. We would appreciate any donations by Monday, January 12th. Felix Projects During the first week of January the students will be taking the STAR reading test to update their reading level. The goal of taking and passing 5 AR quizzes continues this month. As a reminder, if your child exceeds this goal they will receive a new book as a special reward. Please encourage your child to complete their AR quizzes each week. As the same as last month the children will also need memorize/recite one of our poems and complete a reading log by the end of the month. Please make sure reading logs have the required selections HIGHLIGHTED and include a PARENT SIGNATURE. We greatly appreciate all your support at home with these requests. We will not have a book report this month, but next month the students will be completing a Family Ancestor Report. To help with this upcoming project, start discussing with your child a little about their heritage and where their ancestors originated. Felix is finishing up his travels to the student’s homes this month, and will be starting his next round of travels in February. This time Felix is ready to travel throughout the United States and would like the children in G-28 to join him. For our next Felix project the children will be selecting one of our 50 states to learn about. They will research their chosen state and learn 5 or more interesting facts about their state to share with the class. The children will create a Felix State Report Book, where they will record all of the things they have learned from each presentation. More information about this project will be sent home with your child when they take home Felix. Children’s Discover Museum On Wednesday, January 7th the second grade classes will have a visit from the Children’s Discovery Museum. A representative will come to do some discovery-based learning with our class. We will have a 90-minute presentation involving exploration and experimentation with dry ice. We will get to observe chemical reactions and discover how they are made. A visit from CDM is a great way for students to learn more about physical science.
