COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Obtain a better understanding for management
in retailing and business under the guidance of a
retail mentor by successfully completing the
stated objectives I – IV.
I. Develop and refine personal and professional
qualities essential for successful internships and
career planning.
II. Gain an understanding of leadership and
communication methods applicable to
managerial decision-making, planning and
execution relevant to retail and business venues.
III. Review traditional and contemporary theories
regarding workplace and societal ethical
standards and their applications for retail and
business professionals.
IV. Examine contemporary management theories
and practices and their relevance to retail and
business venues.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH ALL OF THIS
WORK???
1. Incorporate all four stated objectives into
a community-based team project
throughout the semester.
2. By the completion of the semester the
students will have developed a tri-phase
portfolio to demonstrate competency in:
a) Leadership and management
practices
b) Ethics
Capabilities for professional presentations
including Personal Information Communications.

A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60% – 69%
F = BELOW 60%

PARTICIPATION:
Choose one: a) compile an electronic portfolio
with Career Services; b) write an in-depth ethical
analysis of a company assigned by the instructor.
Mainly lecture with a few supplemental power
point slides. Student participation in class
discussions; students will be called on randomly.
Some guest speakers.
1. This is a writing emphasis course with
numerous writing assignments. Students may be
asked to share written assignment topics with
the class.
2. This is an active listening and note-taking
environment so no laptops are allowed unless
they are deemed necessary by the DRC.

REMINDERS:
Instructor retains the right to make changes to the syllabus and grading format as needed. Students
will be notified in advance on the D2L course website and in class.
1. All holidays or special events observed by organized religions, and sanctioned by the University
of Arizona will be honored for those students who request specific time off for observance of
such holidays and events. Absences preapproved by the UA Dean of Students (or dean’s
designee) will be honored. You must notify the instructor well in advance to make any
necessary adjustments or changes.

4. Cell phones must be turned off and removed from desks during class. Texting during class will
be viewed the same as talking inappropriately during class and will not be tolerated.

Attendance at two information sessions outside of the class will be required. See assignment
sheet. Students must participate in the Portfolio Event or their grade will be lowered.
7. At least two textbook assignments will be collected randomly throughout the semester, see
assignment sheet for details. See Assignment sheet.
8. If a student is concerned about a grade received on an assignment or an exam, they will have 48
hours after the grade is posted on D2L to notify the teacher. Grades are not negotiable.

online, are original materials and as such reflect intellectual property of the instructor or author
of those works. All readings, study guides, lecture notes and handouts are intended for
