Parking Lot Observations/Drivers

The Categories are organized in order of how we went through them during the meeting today, and the observations (sub bullets) are list by the category in which they were made.

Built Environment o Transportation system, especially sidewalks o Plants to remove toxins (solution) o Home-rule/ zoning and land use o Awareness of healthy eating voucher programs o Safety/perception of public spaces and parks

Behavioral Health o Transportation o Language issues o State push to environmental interventions only o Lack of medical homes o Connection between mental health and chronic disease o Behavioral health not covered; have to pay upfront; many providers don’t take insurance (issue for all, even the insured) o Long wait-lists for social services agencies (issue for all, but especially homeless individuals) o Language barriers with transport services, providers, and their staff for Spanish-speaking population

Chronic Disease o Inactivity of children in particular is an issue o Lack of knowledge/coordination of services o Cost of healthy food, especially for low-income population o Food co-ops and pantries (bulk buying) as a possible solution o High cost of healthy foods and lack of community gardens contributes to obesity/other chronic conditions

Environmental Health o Lack of clear communication around idling laws o Occupational health is a cross-cutting driver for many health issues o Food safety is connects environmental health and communicable disease categories

Wellness and Lifestyle o Need to have conversations around the number of beds available for the homeless o Intersection with mental health and housing should be explored o County-level data obstructs issues in sub-populations o Perception of crime prohibits physical activity o Lack of models for healthy living
