ROLAND PARK ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL 5207 ROLAND AVE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND 21210 410.396.6420 (P) / 410.545.6328 (F) Roland Park Elementary/Middle School Fact Sheet Middle School Model 672 students in grades 6 thru 8 211 students in the 6th grade this school year 25-32 students per homeroom 8 homerooms per grade level 2 teams per grade level – O Team and R Team 4 homerooms per team – Language Arts, Science, Math, and Social Studies 2 homerooms are Ingenuity program students 3 homerooms are Advanced Academic program students 3 homerooms are General Education program students Each student attends 5 classes each day for 70 minutes each Students stay with their homeroom groups for all four core subject area classes Students are mixed across their team for SPAR classes 4 classes are the same everyday – Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies 1 class is a specialty area (SPAR) class and it changes every other day on an A day B day schedule Each student has 2 SPAR classes per semester (2 quarters) SPAR classes include Foreign Language, Visual Art, Physical Education, Music, and Theater Spanish and French is offered to 7th and 8th graders; students choose their foreign language before 7th grade and will participate in that class for 2 years Academic Programs General Education program Reserved for students who live within the RPEMS zone Addresses on file with the school system determine if a child is within the RPEMS zone Only Roland Park and Medfield Elementary Schools feed into Roland Park Middle School. Curriculum is set by the Maryland State Department of Education and Baltimore City Public School System There are high expectations for the students, and teachers enrich the curriculum with projects and rigorous activities that challenge the students. Ingenuity program Reserved for students who apply and are accepted into the program, students from across the city can apply Traditionally RPEMS has space for 60 students Students are accepted based on report card grades form 4th grade and the first quarter of 5th grade along with attendance rates over that same period, MSA scores from 4th grade, and 2 teacher recommendations Students who qualify based on the application are invited to take a placement test, the results of the test will determine acceptance and placement into the program Applications can be found at the Ingenuity office located at Poly High School or through your elementary school office Applications are due by – December 20, 2011 The application process is handled by the Ingenuity office. We recommend that all students that apply for Ingenuity also apply for Advanced Academic. The Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum is the same as the Advanced Academic program curriculum, the Science and Math curricular are different and unique to the program Ingenuity students in 6th grade follow the Singapore Math curriculum while the Science curriculum covers the same topics as both the General Education and Advanced Academic programs however even more depth and higher critical thinking skills are applied Advanced Academic program Reserved for students who apply and are accepted into the program, students from across the city can apply Traditionally RPEMS has space for 90 Advanced Academic students Students are accepted based on report card grades form 4th grade and the first quarter of 5th grade along with attendance rates over that same period and MSA scores from 4th grade A composite score for each child is generated based on those numbers and each child is given a rank which determines their placement Applications can be found on the BCPSS website or your child’s elementary school office The application process is handled by the Office of Student Placement at North Avenue The curriculum is the same as the General Education program curriculum however the pace of the lessons are faster and more in-depth for certain most topics is explored and students are academically challenged and must meet high standards to remain in the program.
