Textbooks: Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic: (3rd edition) Finney, Demana, Waits, Kennedy ; Calculus of a
Single Variable: (5th edition) Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards. The student will be expected to pay for any damages to the
books or if they are lost.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course follows the College Board syllabus for the Advanced Placement Calculus AB
Exam. The exact topics can be viewed at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html.
It includes the study of functions, limits and continuity, derivatives and integrals, as well as applications as outlined in
detail on my school website.
FORMAT: Lecture, group discussion, individual and group work, student board work
REQUIREMENTS: Each student must have a notebook for Calculus only.
Do not throw your homework or tests away. You will use them for the exam review. Label all homework with date,
page number, and topic.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be graded periodically but its daily completion is an integral and necessary part for a
complete understanding and mastering of the material. Copy the problem, show the work as demonstrated in class.
Grading of all work is done according to the College Board Standards: THE AP EXAM GIVES PARTIAL CREDIT
FOR MANY SIMPLE STEPS BUT NONE JUST FOR A CORRECT ANSWER WITHOUT ANY
JUSTIFICATION.
You need to show your work in a mathematical acceptable way as approved by the College Board and
communicate your answers verbally and in writing in a mathematical appropriate way as outlined by the College
Board. Your AP exam will be graded ultimately in the same way.
GRADING SYSTEM:
1st Semester: TESTS 55%
2nd Semester: TESTS 45%
HOMEWORK 10%
HOMEWORK 10%
CLASSWORK/QUIZZES 20% EXAM 15%
CLASSWORK/QUIZZES 10% PRACTICE AP TEST 35%
The exam grade for the semester in which the AP test is administered counts no more than a class test grade. A student
may exempt up to two exams each semester if the student has a 90 average or higher in each of the courses to be
exempted. A student may not exempt both the first and second semester exam in the same course
This is an AP COURSE.
As we get further into the course, I will be grading quizzes and tests on an AP scale: (1=F, 2=D, 3=C, 4=B, 5=A)
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is a serious offense that will not be tolerated. If a student is found cheating
on any written work, a grade of zero will be given on the work, the student will receive an unsatisfactory conduct grade,
parents will be contacted, and the incident will also be reported to an administrator.
Daily: Work must be shown at all times for full credit to be given. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Make-up work: After an absence, students will have 5 school days to make up the missed work (More time can be
arranged with the teacher but time should not exceed 10 school days). If an assignment is not made up then a zero
will be recorded. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what work he/she will need to complete and it is the
student’s responsibility to turn in the make-up work. Makeup work for unexcused absences will not earn full
credit. It may only count up to 70%. Out of school suspension (OSS), may not earn a grade of more than 70%.
The five day rule does not apply to long standing assignments such as term papers and research papers. In these cases, it is
generally expected that the student will turn in the assignment on his/her first day back in school. However, if the teacher
has specified that late long standing assignment will not be accepted (if the student is absent on the date that the long
standing assignment is due), the long standing assignment must be turned in on time, absent or not.
Extra help is available every morning at 7:30, before school. Just show up and ask questions. The above
information is subject to change with notice.
