Imperial College London Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Job Description Job Title: Research Assistant / Research Associate Level: Academic and Research, Level A (Research Assistant) or Level B (Research Associate) Reporting To: Dr George A Constantinides Working Closely With: Research Staff and Students, Industrial and Academic Collaborators Summary of Post The aim of this post is conduct research into the future of hardware-efficient digital numerical computation under finite precision, and in the presence of stochastic effects, with a particular focus on electronic design automation / optimizing compilation. Research Duties - - to develop novel techniques in the synthesis, analysis, and compilation of numerical algorithms into hardware to take initiatives in the planning of research and development to direct the work of small research teams formed by MSc, PhD and undergraduate students (for appointment at Research Associate level) to identify and develop suitable techniques for the collection and analysis of data to conduct data analysis to ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times to maintain accurate and complete records of all findings to write reports for submission to research sponsors and partners to present findings at conferences and to colleagues to attend project meetings to submit publications to refereed journals and conferences to produce and maintain software and hardware, as appropriate to the research tasks to provide guidance to staff and students to attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary to develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community to promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College - to keep careful records of time spent on research tasks, in line with FP7 reporting duties Other Duties - - to undertake appropriate administration tasks to attend relevant meetings to comply with relevant College policies, including Financial Regulations, Equal Opportunities Policy, Promoting Race Equality Policy, Health and Safety Policy, Information Systems Security Policy and Intellectual Property Rights and Register of Interests Policies to undertake any necessary training and/or development any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by line manager / supervisor to undertake light teaching or marking duties if requested To comply with relevant College policies, including Financial Regulations, Equal Opportunities Policy, Promoting Race Equality Policy, Health and Safety Policy, Information Systems Security Policy and Intellectual Property Rights and Register of Interests Policies. Person Specification Qualifications For Research Assistant: MEng/MSc or equivalent (or near completion) with first class honours or distinction in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related subject. For Research Associate: PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area. Knowledge / Experience Essential For Research Associate & Research Assistant: A strong background (commensurate with level applied for) in one or more of the following areas: Probabilistic computing with unreliable circuit elements Digital hardware design, preferably of datapath-oriented designs Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for digital hardware Optimizing compiler technology Numerical analysis, especially roundoff error analysis Program analysis or verification, especially for numerical code Computer arithmetic For Research Associate (in addition to the above): knowledge of research methods practical experience within a research environment excellent publication record in relevant and refereed international journals and conferences practical experience of presenting research work orally and in written form Desirable Skills in one or more of software engineering, convex optimization, statistics and nonlinear systems theory are also highly desirable.
