What do I study to become a Veterinarian

advertisement
How do I prepare to become a
Veterinarian?
Becoming a veterinarian requires much dedication and diligent study. The veterinary
medical student is required to meet a high level of performance and master a
challenging curriculum. The demands on student time and effort are considerable, but
the rewards and career satisfaction are personal achievements that make significant
contributions to our society.
Preprofessional Preparation
Students preparing for admission to the DVM professional program must choose a
specific course of study. Students are encouraged to enroll in a degree program
leading to another career choice in case they are not selected for the professional
veterinary medical program. This degree program should provide appropriate
educational experiences and academic rigor to prepare the student for entrance into the
veterinary medical program. Students are strongly encouraged to select courses with
the advice of a knowledgeable counselor.
Preprofessional Testing
A score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required as part of an
application. Texas A&M University considers scores on the verbal, quantitative and
analytical sections.
Career Opportunities
A majority of veterinary graduates enter private clinical practice. Others pursue careers
in education, research, industry, public health, laboratory animal medicine, regulatory
medicine (governmental agencies), zoo animal practice or food safety. Opportunities
also exist in areas of comparative medical research as well as tropical, aquatic and
wildlife medicine.
