Principal’s Message
Welcome to a new school year. We are excited to begin another year
with the children of our school community. School staff has been busy
preparing activities for our students to complete. We are continuing our
PEBS program this year promoting positive behaviour and I ask you to
stress this good behaviour with your children. I encourage you to
continue communication with teachers and administration and if you
have any problems please contact us at your earliest convenience.
Important Dates
15 – PTO Meeting 6:30
22 – Curriculum Night – 7:00
30 – Terry Fox Run
Thank you,
J. Walsh
Curriculum Night – Tuesday, Sept 22
Come join us and find out what will be going on in your child’s classroom this year and meet
your child’s teacher. It starts at 7:00 and will go for about an hour. We will remind you again
about safety in our parking lots and that many will have to park on the surrounding streets (so
give yourself an extra 10-15 mins to be safe).
Lunch Monitors Needed
We are in need of several lunch monitors to supervise the children at lunch time. This is a paid position,
1 hour a day, from 11:30-12:30. Any questions, please call Angie Demings at 902-465-8032.
Twitter
The Halifax Regional School Board and Tallahassee Community School are on Twitter! We will be
tweeting important reminders and info/photos from some of our events. Join us @TCSEP to keep up to
date and see what is happening in our building. Add the Halifax Regional School Board @HRSB_Official
to keep up to date on all the action in our school board.
Safe Arrival
If your child/children will be late or absent for school, please call our “Safe Arrival Line” at
465-8653 before 8:30. Leave your child’s name, teacher’s name and reason for absence.
School Pictures
“Adams Photography Services” will be here on October 15th and 16th. Information sheets will be
sent home at the appropriate time.
Arrival /Dismissal
Parents who drive their children to school are asked NOT to leave their cars in the drop off area
near our school grounds. This is a Kiss-and-Go area only. Please use any vacant parking spot in
our staff parking area (NOT at the Rec Centre) and walk your child to the school. There is no
supervision before 8:10 a.m.; therefore parents are asked not to drop off their students before
that time. If you see adults on the playground before this time, these are the staff from either
Perriwinkles or Depend on Me. They are responsible for their students only.
At dismissal time we are asking parents to wait at the appropriate outside door. This avoids
congestion in the front foyer and hallways. Please inform classroom teachers of any changes to
the dismissal routine. This change should be done by a written note.
When it is raining or inclement weather we will be having an “indoor dismissal”. This means
that all bus students will be lined up in their appropriate line up in our downstairs hallways and
will be dismissed through the front doors as buses arrive. You will know in advance by seeing
the ‘Nova Scotia’ flag flying on our outdoor message board. If the flag is outside, then the
students are inside. If there is no flag, the students will be going out as their usual dismissal.
This applies to early morning and the end of the day dismissal. Parents/sitters/guardians should
pick up their walking students OUTSIDE the front door under the front overhang. For safety
reasons PLEASE DO NOT WAIT IN YOUR CAR FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
Parent/Teacher Organization
The first meeting for our PTO will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15th @ 6:30 at the school. All parents
are welcome to attend. . Be involved in your child’s school to make it a fun filled learning place.
School Visitors/ Volunteers
It is the policy of the Halifax Regional School Board to have all visitors and volunteers to sign in
at the Office and wear an Identification Badge. When you come in the Office please sign in and
pick up the appropriate badge. We are asking that parents only go to your child’s classroom if
you have scheduled a meeting with your child’s teacher. We will gladly call your child down to
the office if you have come to get him/her.
Peanut-Free School
At Tallahassee Community School we have some students who have life-threatening allergies to
nut products, especially peanuts. These students cannot have any contact with these products.
Even the presence of nut products in the school will cause them extreme danger. We would like
your help in making Tallahassee a “Peanut Conscious” school. You can be of great assistance to
us by checking your child’s lunch and recess snacks. Any products that contain nuts, peanut
butter, or that may have come in contact with any nut product cannot be in our school. The only
way we can ensure a safe environment for such an allergy is to avoid having the products in the
building. If you have any questions concerning this policy, please feel free to call the school.
Thank you all so much for your cooperation in making our school a safe place for everyone.
Terry Fox Run
Our school will participate in the National Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 30th. We
are asking each student to bring in a contribution of a Toonie for this very special cause. If you
wish to contribute a larger amount and would like a tax receipt please make your donations online at www.terryfoxrun.org and select Tallahassee as your school.
Parents are welcome to join their child on the walk around the field. An information notice will
be sent home regarding the time your child’s class will be participating.
Thank you in advance for your support and donations.

Guidance News
Welcome back! My name is Donna Meaney and I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce myself. I am the school counsellor at both Ocean View (50%) and Tallahassee (50%)
Elementary Schools. I have been teaching with the Halifax Regional School Board for over 25
years and I am excited about the opportunity to work with your children.
As the school counsellor at Tallahassee, I work with children, teachers, and administration. I am
also looking forward to meeting and collaborating with many parents as well. I believe you, as
parent/guardian, are your child’s best resource. I see my job as removing obstacles to student
success. If there is an issue in your child’s past or present life situation that is getting in the way
of their learning, I will try to work with your child to remove that obstacle.
I will be working with students in groups and individually on topics such as understanding and
expressing emotions, listening and communication skills, developing self-management skills as
well as friendship, decision making, loss, self-control and other topics depending on student need
and interest. Confidentiality is maintained within sessions.
If you have concerns about your child, feel free to give me a call at one of the numbers listed
below. I will try to schedule sessions to avoid absences from specialist classes. My door is
always open if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you and
your child.
Thank you,
Donna Meaney
