BRIEF SYNOPSIS
A study in family dysfunction, this intense crime story
revolves around a series of interviews with an imprisoned
accused murderer, JOEL STABLER, who is being examined by a
court-appointed psychiatrist charged with determining
whether JOEL is fit to stand trial. As Joel reveals the
bleak circumstances under which he was raised, the highly
observant prisoner also examines the doctor. At the end of
the film, much of what Joel has said is called into
question and the audience is left to piece together what
really happened. BLOOD AND CIRCUMSTANCE is a psychological
puzzle box, filled with questions in a world where there
are no easy answers.

Director’s Statement: Timothy Gordon
The idea in adapting the novel BLOOD AND CIRCUMSTANCE into
a film was to create a tense, psychological mystery that
makes the audience consider many facets of crime and
punishment. The strength of the novel was the strong sense
of character and the idea that the truth can be interpreted
and manipulated in many ways depending on one’s point of
view. The approach was to create a character-driven story
that would rely on a strong sense of visual style and mood
to set the tone. We wanted to put the cast in situations
where they could create unique and compelling performances.
BLOOD AND CIRCUMSTANCE as a film is about the many grey
areas that come with crime and punishment. Ultimately the
film is a psychological puzzle where clues are revealed
slowly and the truth must be found inside the mind of a
killer.
