AN INTRODUCTION TO SHEFFIELD TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION
TRUST
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages the five adult hospitals in Sheffield
(Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Jessop Wing, Weston Park and Charles Clifford hospitals).
As a trust we are responsible for the planning and delivery of the highest quality patient care and
provide services for patients from not only Sheffield and South Yorkshire but all parts of the UK.
We have an annual budget of around £650 million, employ almost 13,000 staff and provide around
one million patient episodes each year, making us the second largest NHS trust in England.
As well as providing hospital services for our local population, our hospitals provide a range of
vital regional and national specialties. Regionally these include cardiac and orthopaedic surgery,
neurology and renal care. National services include pulmonary hypertension treatment, particular
ophthalmology, spinal and neurosurgical care, and specialist cancer treatments.
We have been one of the best performing NHS organisations in the country over the last five
years. In October 2007 the Healthcare Commission scored us excellent in use of resources and
excellent for quality of services. We are also proud of our record as having the lowest MRSA
infection rates amongst major teaching hospitals in the UK, according to figures released by the
Health Protection Agency in 2007. The Trust was awarded the Dr Foster’s Hospital of the Year
accolade in 2005.
1
We also have a strong tradition of research and the Trust leads on a number of key studies
including prostate cancer, diabetes, breast cancer and chronic chest disease.
2
An NHS Foundation Trust
We became one of the first NHS Foundation Trusts in the country on 1 July 2004. NHS foundation
trusts have greater freedom from central government control and the ability to work with their
community and staff to set local health priorities. We have a well-established elected governor’s
council, which is made up of patients, public, staff and partner organisations and works with the
Trust to help set strategic goals and make key decisions.
Our Hospitals
Although the Trust has overall management responsibility for the services provided, our hospitals
each have their own history, which we are rightly proud of. Between them they offer just about
every kind of service available in the modern NHS.
The Northern General is the largest of our hospitals with 1100 beds. Located to the north of the
city, the hospital is spread out over a large site. Amongst the specialist services located there are
orthopaedics, renal, spinal injuries, general surgery and cardiothoracic (heart and lung) services.
Sheffield’s adult accident & emergency department is also based here. A major £30 million stateof-the-art new medical ward development, known as the Sir Robert Hadfield Wing, opened to
patients in April 2007. A brand new critical care facility, one of the largest in Europe, is currently
under construction and will open in 2008.
The other Trust hospitals are based closely together on a campus to the west of the city centre; this
is known as the Central Campus.
The Royal Hallamshire is a major acute teaching hospital based around a tower block of 800 beds
and a large outpatient department. The hospital is home to a range of expert specialist services
which include neurosciences, urology, general surgery, breast surgery, dermatology, hearing
services and ophthalmology. The hospital also has a minor injuries unit and an NHS Walk-InCentre for emergency care.
Linked to the Royal Hallamshire by a footbridge, the Jessop Wing is Sheffield’s 216 bed women’s
hospital. Opened in February 2001 it has brought together all of the city’s obstetric, gynaecology
and neonatology services in a state-of-the-art, purpose built, £24 million building. 6000 births take
place at the Jessop Wing each year.
Weston Park is one of only three purpose built specialist cancer hospitals in the UK and provides
a full range of non-surgical cancer services to the population of South Yorkshire, North
Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It also enjoys national and international recognition for
certain specific treatments. It has 140 beds and is home to a specialist cancer research centre and
one of the UK’s only teenage cancer units.
The Charles Clifford is a dental teaching hospital linked to The University of Sheffield’s School of
Clinical Dentistry. The hospital provides dental outpatient services and emergency dental services
for the city.
As a teaching trust, all of the hospitals have close links to the University of Sheffield, home to
Sheffield’s medical school, and Sheffield Hallam University - which provides nurse training. It is
a major teaching centre for future health professionals.

THE DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
The Department of Paediatric Dentistry is based in the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, which is
situated 1.25 miles from and to the west of the City Centre and forms part of the University
teaching complex, which includes the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, as well as being within the
University Campus. The Dental Hospital was opened in 1953, extended in 1965 and a new wing
to house the academic facilities was opened in 1991. A major programme of new building and
refurbishment within the existing hospital building will take place during 2007/2008.
Charles Clifford Dental Hospital is managed by the Oral and Dental Directorate, part of the Head
and Neck Group, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Charles Clifford is a University Dental Teaching Hospital with a recent increase in
undergraduate intake to approximately 75 students each year. Within the closely affiliated School
of Hygiene and Therapy there is an intake of 30 students each year. Postgraduate students are
also accepted to study for a variety of higher degrees/diplomas in all subjects.
The Hospital serves a resident population of approximately 538,000 and in addition, provides
specialist services for a wider area, so this figure rises to approximately 672,000 when considering
patients from adjacent districts. Specialist services are provided in the departments of Diagnostic
and Surgical Services (OMFS, Oral surgery, Oral medicine, Radiology), Restorative Dentistry,
Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry.
4
The Paediatric Dentistry clinic was totally redesigned and re-equipped in 1999 and comprises a 16
chair open plan clinic on the ground floor. There is an additional enclosed surgery together with
an adjacent surgery for the delivery of care for special needs patients. The two enclosed surgeries
are equipped for left and right-handed delivery and have piped gases for the delivery of
inhalation sedation as required. A major programme of refurbishment within the existing hospital
building will take place during 2007/2008.
RELATED FACILITIES
There are close links between all Departments, including orthodontics. Laboratory facilities are
centralised within the building on the third floor. There is a well-equipped Dental Radiology
Department and Medical Illustration facilities are available, both within the Charles Clifford and
at the nearby Royal Hallamshire and Children’s Hospitals. Excellent library facilities are available
in the University Medical and Dental Library within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. In addition
a limited number of reference books, journals, CAL programmes and a PC are available in the
Clinic area, for general use.
Restricted car parking is available at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Canteen facilities are
available within the Dental Hospital and adjacent hospitals. The nearest shopping centre at
Broomhill is half a mile away. The NHS has an active sports club at Fulwood and the majority of
University sports facilities are within a short walking distance. To the west of the City is the Peak
District National Park.
SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
The Sheffield Children’s Hospital (a separate Trust), which is situated approximately 300 yards
from the Dental Hospital, has 148 beds and includes most medical and surgical specialties. The
Hospital, which is undergoing an extensive rebuilding and redevelopment programme, has
become one of the foremost children’s hospitals in the UK. It provides several regional and superregional services and a 24-hour accident and emergency service. There are currently four weekly
operating sessions (Monday, Thursday mornings and all day Friday) undertaken by Paediatric
Dentistry.
THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department provides the full range of Paediatric Dentistry care as a major secondary and
tertiary referral centre. This includes treatment of special needs children, anxious patients, and
complex dental care for children and adolescents. Joint Clinics are held with Restorative Dentistry,
Orthodontics, Oral Medicine and as part of the Cleft Lip and Palate Team. Facilities exist for the
provision of treatment under sedation and at the Children’s hospital comprehensive dental care
under GA and exodontia.
There are close links with all Paediatric Medical and Surgical specialties based at Sheffield
Children’s Hospitals.
