Independent Reading Project
Choose a book from the library that you are interested in reading. It needs to be a fiction book, at least
180 pages in length, and must not have a movie made in its likeness. The book must be approved by the
instructor before you begin your project!
After reading the book, create a sequence chart. Be sure to include at least 25 boxes. The information
must come from the beginning, middle, and end of your book, and it must be written in complete
sentences. This will be used to help you with the rest of the project:
The Poster – On a large sheet of paper, you will be choosing pictures from newspapers,
magazines, Internet, etc. to make a collage.
The main and largest (or most central) picture should represent the theme of your book.
Two pictures should represent two conflicts (internal or external) in the story.
One picture should represent the main characters personality.
Six pictures should represent main parts of your story.
On the back of your poster, you need to tell what pictures correspond with the above
information and why:
Example: I chose the picture of the snake for the character personality because the
main character was not easily trusted and was manipulative.
At the culmination of the project, you will give a short presentation (2-4 minutes) describing your poster
and how the pictures pertain to your book.
There will be some class time to read the independent reading book, but most of the reading must be
done on your own. Write the due dates at the bottom of this page as discussed in class.
I am always available for questions. Please find a book that you enjoy reading. Reading should be fun!
