Hello!
Congratulations on your exam results. This letter means you have been awarded a place on one of the best university
courses around, so well done!
As presidents of the Manchester Chemical Engineering Society: “ChemEng Soc”, we can’t wait to welcome you to the
school and help you get established at the university. We are here to support you whenever you need us. So if you have
any questions about moving to Manchester, whether it’s what to bring with you, where to go out, or even concerns about
the course itself then we’d be delighted to answer them.
Updates on information
Feel free to get in contact using the email addresses at the bottom of this letter. If you are interested in talking to other
people who will be joining this year, then there is a Facebook group called MANCHESTER CHEMICAL ENGINEERS 2015
ENTRY which you are encouraged to join. On here you can ask about anything you want to know before you get to
university. Please ‘like’ the Facebook page “Chemical Engineering Society Manchester” for general info and details of
society events!
Why join the society?
Manchester has a large Chemical Engineering School with over 800 undergraduates, and we regularly arrange social
events to bring everyone together. In the past these have included the Exxon pub quiz, a welcome curry on the famous
‘Curry Mile’, Halloween fancy dress, Xmas ice-skating, an annual end of year Ball, and many more planned for this year.
Also, there are industry visits, and career events to big companies such as Cadbury’s, Proctor and Gamble, BP,
GlaxoSmithKline, Cargill, Hyde’s brewery to name a few.
Furthermore, weekly PASS sessions offer support from second years, be it social or academic, to all first year students,
which is another way of meeting new people. Before you know it, you will have a large selection of friends and contacts
throughout the course.
Our School sports teams are a great opportunity to take a break from all the work and a brilliant way to meet people from
other years. Currently we have football, rugby, hockey and netball teams that play regularly in the University Leagues. The
Frank Morton Sports Day, is an annual sports social & networking event which always involves strong attendance and
competition between all Chemical Engineering Departments from across the whole country with a vast array of sports, from
ultimate Frisbee to rounders taking place as well as a careers fair and evening events in a different UK city each year.
Manchester this year is hosting!
How do you join?
To become a member of the ChemEng society and get discounts on every event and merchandise throughout the duration
of your degree, it is just a one off fee of £20 for membership. So if you decide that you want to join the best society in the
University of Manchester all you need to do is register with us during welcome week at the CEAS undergraduate welcome
fair or Student’s union fair.
Lastly, have a really incredible summer and feel free to email us any questions that you may have. We can’t wait to
meet you in September!
