Dear Fisheries Enthusiast, I want to welcome you to Mansfield University. I am sure that this is a very exciting time in your life, and I can honestly say that I have been in the exact same situation that you are in right now. Choosing the next step in your educational career is a huge decision. In the end, I chose Mansfield University because of the small-classroom setting, rural surroundings (great fishing and hunting) and caring faculty and staff. My years at Mansfield were some of the greatest in my life! I completed my bachelor’s degree in Fisheries in December 2000, quickly matriculated into graduate school in Alabama and went on to great heights in the world of fisheries and seafood production. I share my personal story to assist you in your decision on whether to attend Mansfield University. I have worked around the world and with many higher education institutions, and I can confidently attest that Mansfield University has the most comprehensive and interactive undergraduate fisheries program in the world. I am a proud alumnus of the Fisheries Science program, and I am privileged now to take charge of this rewarding and exciting curriculum to impart on you the knowledge and skills to be a transformative leader in the field. As with the choice that you need to make in you educational career, the world itself needs to make a choice on how we manage our fisheries resources. For the first time in our history, we see a very real decline in the world’s wild fish populations. According the United Nations, approximately 85% of the world’s fish stocks are fully exploited, overexploited, depleted or recovering. Locally, industry and pollution continue to negatively affect our favorite recreational fishing waters. Whether you enjoy the pristine Class A trout waters of Pennsylvania, riverine smallmouth bass fishing, or largemouth bass fishing in lakes and ponds, we need to work to better manage our resources. The means with which we conserve and protect these environments is knowledge. A generational shift and the development of a critical mass of highly versatile, highly educated critical thinkers is key to realizing this transformation of our natural resource management. When you choose Mansfield University’s Fisheries program, you choose a path of betterment, fulfillment and enjoyment. We will push you to the limits of your intellect, and then we will go beyond to allow you to operate above the norm. The intent is to teach you how to think rather than what to think. We will accelerate your learning at every stage of your coursework and research at Mansfield University, and you will emerge a confident, proud and marketable individual destined for great heights in the discipline. On behalf of the Fisheries Program at Mansfield University, I welcome you and your family for a memorable day of intrigue and insight into this unique and prestigious program. Please do not hesitate to call on me with any questions or further inquiries. I am here to support you, and I hope that you will see a clear path for your education, career and life with Mansfield University. Sincerely, Aaron A.
