Practicum Position Title: Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Assistant

Industry/Company Description: TotalCardiology Rehabilitation and Risk Reduction Centre
TotalCardiology Rehabilitation and Risk Reduction Centre (formerly Cardiac Wellness Institute of Calgary) is the largest private
cardiology practice in Canada. Since our founding as a two-physician practice by Dr. John Morgan and Dr. Donald Meldrum in
1976, TotalCardiology has continued to grow (now 23 cardiologists) into the largest group of board certified
cardiologists/cardiovascular specialists in Canada.
With our a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of over 125 staff members ranging from allied health care workers to educators,
clinical researchers, executive assistants and administrators, our cardiologists deliver rapid and comprehensive cardiology
consultation, leading edge cardio-diagnostic tests, research and prevention services.
Location: TotalCardiology Rehabilitation and Risk Reduction Centre, Talisman Centre – 2225 Macleod Tr. South, Calgary AB,
Canada T2G 5B6
Required Hours: 60-72 hours per term/5-6 hours per week – 5-6 hours/week evenly dispersed throughout the 13-week
academic term
Academic Session: Fall and Winter Terms
Specified Schedule: The 5-6 hours per week will be completed between 8 am and Noon, Monday – Thursday during the
appropriate semester. The schedule will be determined between the Cardiac Wellness On-site supervisor and the student
following the completion of their interview.
Project Duties/Responsibilities:
Student practicum duties are as follows:
1. Familiarization with the cardiac rehabilitation population via gradual immersion into full participation in supervision of
exercise with cardiac patients
2. Facilitation of cardiac patient exercise programs via assistance with patient flow, exercise equipment set up, warm
up/conditioning phase/cool down procedures and explanation of exercise-related terminology.
3. Lead Stretching and Resistance Training classes for at least two weeks of the practicum.
4. The opportunity to observe and assist with CWIC patient exercise stress testing procedures.
5. Attend patient education classes for program orientation.
6. Review Patient Resources to better understand CWIC patient education material.
Required Student Qualifications:

Currently in final year of kinesiology degree

Current enrollment in, or completion of Knes 373 and Knes 433 is required

Current enrollment in or completion of Knes 495 is preferred, but not required

Working toward ACSM, CSEP-CPT or CSEP-CEP certification is preferred

Valid CPR required
