Job Description Dental Core Training Year 1 Post: University Hospital of South Manchester 13 Months Full time posts to start 6 August 2014 – 1 September 2015 Number of posts available: 5 Overview of Dental Core Training year 1 posts Dental Core Training year 1 posts are for candidates who have already obtained a Certificate of Completion of Foundation (Formerly Vocational) Training issued by a Postgraduate Deanery within the United Kingdom. They are one year posts offered across a range of clinical environments including Manchester Dental Hospital, Acute Trusts’ Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and primary care dental practices and aim to allow the post holder to complete the Curriculum for UK Dental Foundation Training Programme. There will be an exit assessment for certification including an interview, E-portfolio review, Educational Supervisor report and study day attendance record. Location/s: Maxillofacial Unit University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust Southmoor Road Manchester M23 9L T Clinical Environment: This is a busy maxillofacial unit providing care in the wide practice of the specialty. There is a major interest in facial injury, head and neck cancer, orthognathic surgery, osseo integrated dental implants, facial pain, oral medicine as well as a wide practice of intra-oral surgery. In addition trainees attend outpatient clinics and operating theatres in OMFS at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport (distance 9 miles). Educational & Clinical objectives: Broad based clinical training to achieve set competencies within all recommended areas, management, leadership, communication and professionalism learning outcomes. These posts provide a wealth of experience. Working inside a caring departmental structure trainees rapidly gain competence in the assessment and management of dental and maxillofacial emergencies. They gain experience in managing patients admitted to hospital for these specialties and experience in history taking, investigation and diagnosis in the outpatient clinic. They gain the experience of working in a busy general hospital. Such clinical experience provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate exams such as MFDS and MJDF. These posts do require considerable interest, commitment and involvement of the keen trainee. By this the trainees acquire unrivalled experience on which to base subsequent post graduate training. Clinical and Learning opportunities: All posts have an assigned Educational Supervisor and an individual timetable is in place for each post. Each post is supported by clinical supervision and regular appraisal is undertaken to provide feedback in conjunction with the E-portfolio. Full access is given to the NW Deanery DCT 1 training study day programme. These posts are very largely committed to OMFS but there are limited opportunities for experience in orthodontics and in restorative dentistry. Dental Core Training Year 1 trainees are an essential part of the unit and gain experience on the ward, in outpatient clinics and attend operating theatres. There are opportunities for minor oral surgery allied to the skills of the trainee. Attendance at Region wide Training is Mandatory Regular additional teaching occurs at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and 12:30 to 1pm on Thursdays Journal clubs Excellent postgraduate centre with library Junior staff study room in Maxillofacial unit Doctors room on F9 ward Rota information (if relevant): Experience is gained in first on-call OMFS emergencies. Appropriate induction is given both at Trust and department level. On-call supervision is provided by specialist registrars and consultants in OMFS. Salary (& banding info if relevant) £30,132 base salary plus an additional 40% supplement for contribution to the on call rota (Band 1B).
