Overview of Dental Core Training year 1 posts
Dental Core Training year 1 posts are for candidates who have already obtained a Certificate of
Completion of Foundation (Formerly Vocational) Training issued by a Postgraduate Deanery
within the United Kingdom. They are one year posts offered across a range of clinical
environments including Manchester Dental Hospital, Acute Trusts’ Department of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery and primary care dental practices and aim to allow the post holder to
complete the Curriculum for UK Dental Foundation Training Programme.
There will be an exit assessment for certification including an interview, E-portfolio review,
Educational Supervisor report and study day attendance record.
Location/s:
Maxillofacial Unit
University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust
Southmoor Road

Clinical Environment:
This is a busy maxillofacial unit providing care in the wide practice of the specialty. There is a
major interest in facial injury, head and neck cancer, orthognathic surgery, osseo integrated
dental implants, facial pain, oral medicine as well as a wide practice of intra-oral surgery.
In addition trainees attend outpatient clinics and operating theatres in OMFS at Stepping Hill
Hospital, Stockport (distance 9 miles).
Educational & Clinical objectives:
Broad based clinical training to achieve set competencies within all recommended areas,
management, leadership, communication and professionalism learning outcomes.
These posts provide a wealth of experience. Working inside a caring departmental structure
trainees rapidly gain competence in the assessment and management of dental and
maxillofacial emergencies. They gain experience in managing patients admitted to hospital for
these specialties and experience in history taking, investigation and diagnosis in the outpatient
clinic. They gain the experience of working in a busy general hospital. Such clinical experience
provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate exams such as MFDS and MJDF.
These posts do require considerable interest, commitment and involvement of the keen trainee.
By this the trainees acquire unrivalled experience on which to base subsequent post graduate
training.
Clinical and Learning opportunities:
All posts have an assigned Educational Supervisor and an individual timetable is in place for
each post. Each post is supported by clinical supervision and regular appraisal is undertaken to
provide feedback in conjunction with the E-portfolio. Full access is given to the NW Deanery
DCT 1 training study day programme.
These posts are very largely committed to OMFS but there are limited opportunities for
experience in orthodontics and in restorative dentistry. Dental Core Training Year 1 trainees are
an essential part of the unit and gain experience on the ward, in outpatient clinics and attend
