Job Description Dental Core Training Year 1 Post: Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust 3 Full time 13 month posts - 6 August 2014 – 1 September 2015 Number of posts available: 3 Overview of Dental Core Training Year 1 posts: Dental Core Training Year 1 posts are for candidates who have already obtained a Certificate of Completion of Vocational Training, issued by a Postgraduate Deanery within the United Kingdom. They are one year posts offered across a range of clinical environments including Manchester Dental Hospital, Acute Trust’s Department of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery and primary care dental practices and aim to allow the post holder to complete the Curriculum for UK Denta lFoundation Training Programme. There will be an exit assessment for certification including an interview, E-portfolio review, Educational Supervisor report and study day attendance record. Location/s: Dept of Maxillofacial Surgery Royal Preston Hospital Preston PR24HT Dept of Maxillofacial Surgery Chorley and District Hospital Chorley Dept of Maxillofacial Surgery Blackpool Victoria Hospital Blackpool FY3 8NR PR7 1PP Approx distance between sites: 15 miles Clinical Environment: Full oral and maxillofacial units based over three sites – Royal Preston Hospital, Chorley District General Hospital and Blackpool Victoria hospitals. Posts will rotate across all sites. Outpatient clinical suites ,minor operative suites, day case operating facilities, inpatient ward, inpatient operating facilities . Working in a busy maxillofacial unit with exposure to out patients and inpatients .Full range of conditions seen including oral/facial malignancy, orthognathic surgery, salivary gland disease, oral medicine conditions, TMJ surgery, minor oral surgery, pre prosthetic surgery ,oral implantology. Involvement with the management of acute maxillofacial conditions and facial/dento alveolar trauma. In patient management of patients with a variety of maxillofacial conditions . Carrying out under supervision a variety of dento alveolar procedures including mucosal biopsies . Educational & Clinical objectives: Broad based clinical training to achieve Foundation Curriculum competencies within all recommended areas, management, leadership, communication and professionalism learning outcomes. To provide exposure to the majority of clinical domains within the Curriculum for UK DFPTPatient exam &diagnosis, treatment planning, patient management, medical & dental emergencies, Anaesthesia, sedation, pain & anxiety control ,hard & soft tissue surgery, non surgical management of the hard and soft tissues of the head & neck. To improve and enhance the trainees basic skills and advance their clinical skills – assessment, diagnosis and treatment and be actively involved in the decision making process at all stages. To appreciate the involvement of secondary care and liaison between primary and secondary care services. To strengthen their communication, management and decision making skills. Clinical and Learning opportunities: Each post has an assigned Educational Superviser and an individual timetable is in place for each post. Each post is supported by clinical supervision and regular appraisal are undertaken to provide/give feedback in conjunction with the E-portfolio. Full access is given to the NW Deanery foundation training programme. Supervision at outpatient clinics seeing a mix of new patient referrals from Primary care practitioners both medical and dental. Opportunity to assess and diagnose and plan treatment under supervision. Practical involvement with treatment sessions involving both general and local anaesthetic mostly under supervision . Admitting emergency patients Ward cover: communication and time management skills, familiarisation with medical conditions. Emergency patients: recognition and management of dentofacial injuries and odontogenic infection, recognition of medical emergencies. Other non clinical aspects include liaising with other health professionals and professions allied to medicine. Formal consultant led structured teaching programme – fortnightly. Active participation in Audit – formal audit session monthly. Rota information (if relevant): Posts will rotate across 3 hospital sites as outlined above.Day time duties may be at any of the three sites .All on call is based at Royal Preston Hospital and you will not have to travel when you are on call. 1 in 5 non-resident on call rota (EWTD compliant) Essentially the ROTA works that you will be on call one evening per week ( 5pm – 8am ).Regards weekends you will be on call one weekend in 5 ( Saturday 8am through to Monday 8am )Non resident means you do not have to stay at the hospital but be within easy reach of the hospital should you be called .Some doctors stay on site at the hospital within the doctors accommodation . Accommodation can be arranged (chargeable) if requested through the accommodation office. Hospital at night in place to deal with routine calls after hours and ward based problems.
