Glossary of Terms
Budget: Negotiated at the start of each financial year.
Clinical Photography: Professional photography using a range of lighting techniques which
relates to the recording of patients clinical conditions. This may be in theatres, wards, clinics or the
clinical photographic studio. The images may be used for patients’ records, teaching, trials and
research or publication.
Clinical Trials Record System: The department is often involved in clinical trials at a national
and international level. The patients who are photographed are anonymous and there is therefore
a very careful management system which has to be managed and forwarded to the central
research base.
Consent, Security and Confidentiality of Images: The Manager is the lead expert in the
management of clinical photography within the University of Leeds and the NHS Trust related to
the Leeds Dental Institute. A Photographic Consent and Confidentiality Policy is reviewed annually
by the Medical and Dental Illustration Management and aims to protect the patient’s rights, by
setting standards for every member of staff in the department to follow.
Consent Database: The consent of all photographic images from patients and public relation
images are stored on a database, which requires managing. Public relation images have to be
reviewed on an annual basis. Clinical images need to be checked for level of consent e.g.
publication.
Dental Image Database: An electronic database of electronic images relating to Dentistry. This
database has to be managed and files stored and backed up safely.
Digital Ikam Camera: A specialised camera and associated software which requires specialist
training, which is used for recording images of the dentition in order to analyse the colour of teeth.
General Photography: All photography which does not directly relate to patients. Examples of
which are public relations photography, VIP visits, specimens/cultures, architectural, equipment,
accidents/incidents and group photography.
Graphic Design: The production of design and artwork, the majority of which is now on
computers using PC computers with various software packages e.g. desktop publishing, design
and 3D imaging packages. Examples of products created are patient information leaflets, scientific
posters, teaching presentations, interactive CD’s, annual reports and newspapers etc. All
information is reproducible in the printed form or using electronic media.
HPC Educational Requirements for State Registration:
The HPC accepted Clinical
photographers for state registration in September 2004, to be authorised by Parliament, October
2005 with a proposed implementation in early 2006. This will require that all photographers will
require degree level or equivalent to practice, on patients, and maintain a CPD portfolio reflecting
ongoing training and awareness of current issues. They must demonstrate they have attended the
specialist training courses associated with the clinical work they provide.
Image Library Management: Managing the handling of all photographic images to include
storage devices i.e. negatives or digital images (electronic), maintain confidentiality, log consent
levels, image accessibility and control over reproduction/copyright issues.
Intra Oral Photography: The recording of clinical condition inside the mouth using lip retractors
and photographic dental mirrors e.g. orthodontic work, cleft palate, malignancies and skin
conditions etc. Specially designed mirrors are accurately and safely inserted to reflect areas of the
oral cavity which cannot normally be seen from the mouth opening.
Management and Administration of a networked Clinical Image Database: This is the
implementation of a system in preparation for PACS when the electronic patient records are fully
operational. The image management system for digital images (iBase) is held in Medical and
Dental Illustration. It provides an electronic picture file of patients for clinicians and Trust staff, for
the use of clinical records, training, research and publication. It is managed in such a way that it
limits or controls who has access to the images to protect confidentiality of the patient.
Printing Services: Various different external print companies are used in the production of the
design work (dependant on the quality and quantity output). Most of this work which requires
external contractors is full colour production which is not achievable ‘in house’. This requires a
working knowledge of print process to advise customers on the type of print required, quality,
costs relating to quantity, time scales etc. and the ability to negotiate with the suppliers to the most
economic production costs.
Producing Business Cases: Justifying, by report, to Dean/Director or Finance Managers the
reasons for new resources either financial or staff to change service or incorporate new
technologies e.g. digital technology.
Protocols: Professional guidelines for the standardisation of clinical recording which both national
and local is:
 Professional code of conduct.
 Westminster scales of standardised photography – to guarantee comparability/repeatability of
photographs.
 Patient photographic consent.
 Various department policies and procedures for all actions to be carried out on a daily basis.
These written procedures are used to standardise work, required for training and for judging
competencies.
Service Development: Sourcing new areas of work such as expansion of current clinical
demands. Developing graphics and computer related innovations with new software.
Sourcing new customers and services: In order to sustain the level of work required to support
the services and staff employed, a constant review of services and what is cost inefficient or cost
productive needs analysing. Shortfalls due to demand falling e.g. PowerPoint slides or annual
Trust savings need to be filled, to compensate, with new and innovative work. This is a constant
challenge as the technology is changing so fast. Examples:
 Slide scanning of teaching collections
 CD presentations
 Research projects
Strategy for Future: Business planning and assessing current work requests, looking forward to
new developments and technology to make the department financially viable and technologically
progressive.
Ultra Violet/Infra-Red Photography: These are two types of photography using special lighting
and techniques to highlight conditions. Conventional light does not reveal what is beneath the skin
surface – by using UV &IR, they reveal skin pigmentation which can be documented.
VIDEO: Professional videography using a range of lighting techniques which relates to the
recording of patients clinical conditions. This may be in theatres, wards, clinics or the clinical
photographic studio.

such as HIV, TB, diabetes and malaria.
The School of Dentistry
The School of Dentistry is newly convened in August 2013 following a separation of the NHS Trust
and University elements of the former Leeds Dental Institute. The School is committed to the
highest standards of academic excellence and works closely with partners in the Leeds Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver high quality patient care and exceptional clinical training and
education at all levels from undergraduate teaching through to specialist registration. We aim to
underpin high quality clinical research with world class basic and applied science, in order to meet
international priority needs for research in dentistry and to deliver excellent research with impact
for patient and population benefit.
The School appointed a new Dean in 2013, Professor Helen Whelton (President of the
International Association of Dental Research 2013-2014). Professor Whelton’s plans include an
ambitious international clinical research programme, addressing unanswered questions about the
links between oral health and general health.
The School of Dentistry is situated on the second floor of the Worsley Medical and Dental building,
which also accommodates the Dental Hospital, the Medical School and the University of Leeds
Health Sciences Library. It is situated on the southern side of the University campus half a mile from

Student Experience and Education Overview
Professor Michael Manogue - Director of Student Education
The School of Dentistry is currently the most popular dental school in the United Kingdom. We
attract more applicants than any other school for our undergraduate programmes and we are the
second largest school for undergraduate dental education in the UK.
Student education at the University of Leeds’ School of Dentistry is internationally renowned for
being both flagship and innovative, and this is evidenced by the School offering the only
undergraduate masters’ programme in dental surgery in the UK.
In tandem with our
undergraduate masters’ dental surgery programme we also offer a Diploma in Dental Hygiene and
Dental Therapy and, in partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, we are also involved
in the provision of Dental Nursing and Dental Technology training. This makes us unique, as we
are the only school that trains all members of the dental team. In tandem with our undergraduate
programmes we also offer an expanding portfolio of postgraduate dental programmes.
The quality of teaching on our undergraduate programmes is very high and all staff are committed
to continually developing our taught programmes. Recently the General Dental Council inspected
all our undergraduate programmes with all programmes being found to be of the highest standard.
Our programmes are completely modular and benefit from having Year and Module Leads with
Programme Leads managed under the direction of the Director of Student Education.
All members of staff within the School participate in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught
provision and this, we believe, maintains the high quality of our teaching, which is consistently
assessed by our students as being very high.
We have a student advice team, which supports all students within the school. This along with our
personal tutoring system, with which all staff engage, provides the highest levels of pastoral
support for our students.
Research Overview
In REF2014 the School of Dentistry (returned in Unit of Assessment 3: Allied Health Professions,
Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) was rated very highly, with 91% of its research rated as world
leading or internationally excellent. The successful candidate will join a group of high quality,
highly active researchers. The School of Dentistry enjoys a lively, multi-disciplinary research
environment and has a long held reputation for excellence in interdisciplinary research. We
contribute to a number of the Faculty of Medicine and Health research themes.
Our vision is to use interdisciplinary expertise to understand the fundamental mechanisms of
disease, to identify and treat early, improve outcomes, restore function and address the needs for
prevention. We seek to extrapolate the findings and tools developed for dental research across to
biomedicine in general and position our research at the forefront of biomedical and health
sciences research. We have three Research Groups, each with internationally recognised
leadership:
 Basic Dental Sciences Research Group led by Professor J. Kirkham
 Clinical Dental Research Group led by Professor D.V. Clerehugh
 Dental Education Research and Scholarship Group led by Professor M. Manogue
The Groups collaborate extensively with each other and with colleagues within our Faculty
(Medicine and Health), as well as in other Faculties (e.g. Biology, Engineering, Mathematics and
Physical Sciences).
International Profile and Initiatives
In line with the University of Leeds strategy the School of Dentistry is committed to enhancing our
international profile through the development of key strategic partnerships. Formal collaborative
agreements between Leeds and Dental Schools in the Universities of Michigan, Osaka and
Nanjing have been established to promote excellence in international, multi-centre collaborative
research, particularly in clinical and translational research and regenerative technologies. Building
on shared expertise and knowledge amongst our partners we aim to work together to improve oral
health outcomes in our own communities and across the globe.
In addition to formal Memoranda of Understanding with the Universities of Michigan and Osaka we
have established a Joint Centre for Oral Health Sciences with the University of Nanjing. We are
also founder members of the World Universities Network for Oral Health Sciences, a network of
research intensive universities committed to addressing global challenges in Oral Health. The
impact from the development of our strategic partnerships has included joint research through
staff/student exchange, resulting in publications, grant income and enhanced opportunities for
dissemination of research advances to a global audience.
