Standard: Foreign language standard of 5C - communication, culture, connection, comparison, community and four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), plus Chinese input method and phonetic guide Textbook: Encounter Chinese Language and Culture student book and character writing book by Cynthia Ning and John S. Montanaro of Yale University Press. Supplement materials: Chinese dictionaries, grammar books, various learning materials, and online relevant authentic materials and resources. COURSE DESCRIPTION The course will first review Chinese 1 materials from self, family, friend and hobbies vocabularies and usage to broaden themes to hobbies, jobs, feeling, daily, weekend routines, transportations, shopping and traveling. This course will keep build upon students’ abilities and with a strong emphasis on the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational. Students are challenging to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing/typing skills through meaningful interactive activities. They are also create and build upon cooperative learning environment to kuài l è xué zhōng wén xué y ǐ zhì yòng 快 乐 学 中 文, 学 以 致 用 COURSE OBJECTIVE Students build up a learning community with a global perspective and collaborative spirit to support and challenge each other. Students increase confidence to communicate Chinese in a safe, supportive and stimulate environment. Students increase their awareness of Chinese social-culture as it is embedded in the Chinese language. Students able to express their ideas, opinions, suggestions and feelings related to school, transportation, shopping, food and relationships. Students are encouraging to discover, connect, and evaluate their knowledge and abilities with Chinese language and cultures and connect to other subjects. Students learn to utilize reliable and useful Chinese websites and technologies to enhance their comprehensions and performances. Student need to learn and familiar with to use at least one Chinese input method, so you can type Chinese. Translation works are not accepted. GRADE SCALE A 90 -100 % B 80 - 89 % C 70 - 79 % D 60 - 69 % F 59 % & below Every Quint students are expecting to write a self-evaluation and receive an evaluation report. Students also need to find a language partner and keep a learning journal Students are expected to take at least three years of language in the Upper School. Student attends class to be essential requirement ASSESSMENT (approximate) 25 % Class Participation and group works 25 % Home works and assignments 25 % Tasks, projects and reflection paper 25 % Oral interviews, quizzes and tests CLASS EXPECTATION Use common sense and courtesy: respect oneself, others and our environment. Be on time, prepared and organized learning materials Put away and turn off electronic devices when they are not relevant. Be responsible and in charge of your own actions. Be sensitive to different cultures and learning styles. Be an active learner and participate in all class activities, especially oral practices and pair, group works.
