Brink PTSA Newsletter School News/Events PTSA NEWS: "The world would be a better place if ...” That is the theme for this year's Reflections program. Students can submit an entry in any or all of the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music, Photography, or Visual Art. The entry must be their own, original work and follow the theme of the program. Students can get more information from their art, English, or music teacher. Or, ask for a flyer in the office. Yearbook Go to jostensyearbooks.com and order your yearbook today! DRAMA: Alice in Wonderland audition packets will be available for pick up in room 408 beginning Monday, October 6th. All permission and information forms are due October 15th. The Brink Fall Campus Beautification Event will take place after school on Tuesday, October 14 from 2:30 to 3:30. We will be planting fall flowers, spreading new mulch in flower beds where it is bare, and trimming/pruning the bushes around the school. We would like to invite not just students, but parents/guardians as well to join the faculty and staff in this effort. You just need to show up willing and ready to give of your time and effort. Brink’s “STUDENTS AGAINST HUNGER” food drive is running until October 15th. The 7th grade is competing against the 8th grade, with the winning grade’s top three classes getting a donut and juice party. All participants in the winning grade will receive a small prize. And at the end of the drive, everyone in the school can be proud that Brink has helped people in our community who don’t have enough to eat each day. Take your cans to your 1st hour teacher. NJHS is sponsoring this activity, so members can get one service point for bringing six full size cans. Teachers will have sign-up sheets in their rooms. The district is sponsoring the annual Red Ribbon Poster and Essay Contests. Information is posted in each English classroom, the Art classroom and in the counseling center. Entries are due to Ms. Salter by October 20. Last year’s winners were featured in the yearbook, so you can check them out. Brink will have 3 winners in each contest and they will be sent to the district for judging. Page 2 Newsletter of 4 School Grade Grade Level NewsLevel News Page 3 of 4 School Newsletter School Info Cont’d: Westmoore’s PTSA and counseling center are sponsoring a parent outreach with Mark Woodward, an OBN (Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics) officer, speaking to our community about the drugs that are being introduced to our children. Mr. Woodward (a former Jaguar) will present a power point regarding how drugs are affecting our families, community and state. Parents, faculty students and staff from every elementary, junior high that feed into Westmoore High School are invited to attend. October 23, 2014; 6:30-7:30; Westmoore Lecture Center *Parents please come in to this powerful presentation after you have visited with your child’s teacher during parent/teacher conference. NJHS INFORMATION FOR 7TH GRADERS National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is “More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.” It is a service organization that strives to give back to our school and community through our various service projects and donations of time, goods, and money. Any student with a 3.50 GPA in the first semester of the seventh grade is eligible for consideration for membership. In April, you will receive information by mail that you are eligible to apply. If interested, you will fill out forms and the faculty will furnish information as to your character, citizenship and leadership in their classes. The Faculty Council will use this information to decide whether to accept you for membership. Once selected, students are awarded membership at a required Induction Ceremony. Their book study work is due October 14th. This is the day they will write in class about the novel as well. Coach Upshaw’s math classes will be taking a quiz (September 30th) on 2-Step & Multi-Step Equations / Inequalities. Be sure to check his website out daily for announcements, assignments, etc. Mrs. Corcoran’s Class – We are currently continuing our literature study on The Giver. The students will not be allowed to take these books home with them during this unit of study. If your child is absent for any reason, you will need to check out the book from a library or get an online version of it for an IPad or kindle. The Vocabulary Exam will be on October 15th and the comprehension Exam will be on October 22nd. All classes are doing a writing or poster project for Red Ribbon Week that are all due on Oct 20th. We will be doing a partner project on the giver which is a brochure and class presentation. Students will work in class on Oct 23rd, 27th, & 28th. Presentations will be Oct 29th – 31st and students need to dress appropriately for presentations. All of the directions for all of these projects can be found on my web site. Ms. Sheaffer’s 8th Grade English class will be taking essay entries for the Red Ribbon Contest for 50 extra credit points!!! 2014 Theme is: Love Yourself, Be Drug Free. Essays should be 250 words or less and must be typed. The student’s name, grade and teacher MUST be on the back of the entry. Judging criteria as follows: *Reflection of theme: 30 points *Creativity: 20 points *Depth of thought: 30 points *Grammar, spelling, punctuation: 20 points ***Entries are due to Ms. Sheaffer by October 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Ms. Rice’s classes will begin working on grammar next week. We will take a look at subjects and predicates, direct and indirect objects, and predicate adjectives and nouns. We will also visit the Book Fair next Friday, October 10! Also, just a reminder that PTSA Reflections is required for all Pre-Ap English classes. My students received this assignment on October 1, and it is due on Monday, October 20. Late passes will not be accepted on this assignment since it has an extended due date. The theme is “The world would be a better place if….” Mrs. White’s and Mrs. Harmon’s Eighth Grade Reading: This week in reading students will begin reading the novel The Outsiders. The students will be asked to complete several projects at school/home during our unit. Please make sure your student brings their novel daily to class. Also, you may find our daily assignments on our website-click on daily agenda. Finally, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is not only a novel but a movie- please refrain from renting it until the students are finished with our unit. Thank you. Have a wonderful week/end. Parent portal is the grade book program where you can view your child’s grades. My website, accessed through the Brink home page, under my name in the staff category, will assist you with daily homework assignments, test dates, etc…. Mrs. Corral's classes: We just finished our class novel and will be reading Rikki-TikkiTavi by Rudyard Kipling until Fall Break. Mrs. Corral will begin maternity leave then, and is confident your students will have an excellent teacher in Mrs. Turner!
