History comes to life as AHC summer campers explore the past through games, historic simulations,
performances, outdoor expeditions, and hands-on activities. Each weekly session has a new theme, so
campers enjoy a variety of immersive camp experiences all summer long. The museum is our
playground!
PRESCHOOL CAMP
Adventures in History
July 7-11
Ages 4-5
Your curious little one will love discovering history in a camp designed just for them. Campers spend the
day exploring subjects they love such as farms, trains, houses, and animals through fun games, stories,
and crafts. In the afternoons, campers have time to rest and play under the caring supervision of our
educators.

Globe Trekkers and Trailblazers

Ages 6-8 and 9-11
Follow in the footsteps of Vikings, pirates, conquistadors, and famous explorers on their epic adventures
to find remarkable discoveries. By land, sea, or space, it’s the journey of a lifetime.
The 1930s
June 9-13
Ages 6-8 and 9-11
From the stock market crash to the Great Depression, and the dust bowl to the New Deal, visit this unique
period in US history when high spirits mixed with bad luck. Learn how both sides lived with a behind-thescenes pass to the Swan House. “Happy Days Are Here Again!”
History of Medicine
June 16-20
Ages 6-8 and 9-11
The history of medicine is filled with stories of inexplicable illnesses, dubious diagnoses, and curious
"cures." Explore Native American herbal remedies, 19th century snake oils, life-changing medical
advancements, historic pandemics, and bizarre medical treatments—the weird, the gross, and the
questionable—we have the cure for what ails you!

The Warren Report is released in the wake of the JFK assassination. Beatlemania grips the nation, and
the British Invasion begins. Vietnam and the Cold War rage on. Nelson Mandela is imprisoned. The
Civil Rights Act is signed. Martin Luther King, Jr. receives the Nobel Peace Prize. And that’s just
scratching the surface. What a year it was!
Southeastern Indians

Who was here first? Where are they now? Discover the history and culture of the tribes of the Southeast
through hands-on activities exploring their art, food, games, language, and beliefs, and see how their
influence continues to shape the region today.
Science Fiction Prediction
July 14-18
Ages 6-8 and 9-11
Touch screens, ear buds, the cloud, genetic engineering, even tanks and submarines—so many things in
our modern world were actually invented decades ago when imaginative writers put pen to paper.
Examine the science and history behind movies, comics, TV shows and books to see how so many things
dreamt up in works of science fiction have become reality.
The Battle of Atlanta

The Civil War comes home. The battle is fought in our backyards. Reenactors and historians bring the
homefront and the battlefront to life on our Civil War era farm and in our award-winning exhibitions in this
week-long exploration of the turning point of the Civil War.
The Great War

Ages 6-8 and 9-11
This summer marks the 100th anniversary of one the bloodiest conflicts the world has ever known. Learn
about the causes and consequences of WWI and see the war through the eyes of the men and women
who lived it. Fight in the trenches, protest in Russia, make peace in Versailles, and experience ‘the war
to end all wars.’
MARGARET MITCHELL HOUSE SUMMER CAMPS

Margaret Mitchell House writing camps provide an opportunity for youth to discover the power and
excitement of writing while honing their skills in a fun, interactive environment. With 10-15 participants
per camp, each young author receives individual attention while learning how to create meaningful prose
through a variety of techniques, like stream-of-consciousness writing, games, journaling, free verse
poetry, and other forms.

Set the stage for the perfect summer. Delve into the world of theater, journeying from an inkling of an
idea on the page, and from the page to the stage. Develop your own unique voice and experience firsthand the joy of hearing your words, characters, and situations come to life as you create a script for a live

Write On: The Essentials

Ages 9-11 and 12-14
Whether you are writing for fun or writing for school, you will benefit from learning the basics of doing
research, building compelling characters and interesting plots, and writing a good story with good
grammar. Through word and writing games, journaling, and an off-site observational field trip, learn the
essentials that lead to a “writing life.”

Explore the many different fields of journalism as you explore the many sights and sounds our exciting
city has to offer. Take on the role of an investigative reporter, photojournalist, sports writer, and more as
you visit museums, theaters, parks, and other cultural destinations.

Unravel the mysteries of Atlanta’s historic places and haunted spaces. Use the stories and environments
