Eagles Boys and Girls Champs Golf Championship 2013 –
Report from Doug Crowe, Tournament Convenor
The Eagles Boys and Girls Golf Championship was held at Manor Park Golf Sanctuary, Lower Hutt from Monday 30th
Sept to Wednesday 2nd October.
With the exception of Buller/Westland and Bay of Plenty all Societies were fully represented with 3 players.
Buller/Westland could only manage to send one player and Bay of Plenty had a late withdrawal of a player due to
illness. This resulted in 15 invited players from Wellington making up the full field of 60 players. It was good to see
many who played in Nelson last year returning for this tournament.
Everyone arrived safely, but the two boys from Queenstown. They managed to miss a connecting flight in
Christchurch and arrived late afternoon. Most of the players managed to get a practice round on Monday afternoon
or at least a few holes and a look at the course.
The Manor Park course was presented in excellent condition and the player’s comments were very complimentary.
This was despite some very wet weather the week prior which did leave some wet areas.
Tuesday dawned cool and foggy over the golf course but this soon cleared to a fine warmish day. The only downside
on an otherwise good days golf was some slow play caused in the main by tree trouble and problems with the many
creek hazards. However all players enjoyed the day and some good scores were posted, notably a 73 (2 over) by
Daniel Hillier from Wellington in the morning and a 1 under 70 by Fletcher Broderick from Taranaki in the afternoon.
For the girls Brydie Hodge from Manawatu/Wanganui had a 76 in the morning and in the afternoon Holly Winter
from Taranaki and Jocelynn Katu from Auckland had 76.
The final round on Wednesday saw us use a shotgun start for the first time. This proved very successful with all
players in the Clubhouse for lunch around midday following an 8am start. We did this to facilitate players travel
schedules, to ensure a timely prize-giving and to meet the Clubs afternoon golf programme. It is something we
recommend for future championships.
A cool wind greeted the players and made scoring a little more difficult, although some good scores were posted,
notably 73 from Hake Heke from Northland. Brydie Hodge posted a 74 for the girls.
Overall boys gross winners was Daniel Hillier from Wellington and the girls winner was Brydie Hodge from
Manawatu/Wanganui. The teams event was won by Aorangi.
Congratulations to all prize-winners and thank you to all players for their participation. My thanks also for the
conduct of the players both on and off the course; this was exemplary with positive feedback. It was our pleasure to
have you all at Manor Park.
Many thanks to my organising committee for a job well done. Also to all my fellow Eagles and to others who assisted
in some way to make the tournament a success. Thank you.
Thanks also to the members and management of the Manor Park Golf Sanctuary for the use of their facilities and the
presentation of the course.
To our sponsors, specifically Wellington Community Trust, thank you for your support in helping to make the event a
success.
I wish to acknowledge the attendance of our National President Myles Murphy, our ex National President and
Wellington Life Member Kevin Murphy, National Life Member Keith Meadows, Mark Cassidy, CEO Wellington
Community Trust and Steve Wallace, General Manager Manor Park Golf Sanctuary.
Finally to all players, practice hard, play well, enjoy the game and challenge for a place in next year’s tournament at
Levin.
