Statistics is based upon numerical values and analysis. This guide provides valid sources for numerical databases, analysis examples, instruction on statistic concepts, and statistic calculators. Additionally, the materials this guide introduces are from valid and reliable sources, and are effective in solving homework and exam problems. All of the resources are free to use. □ Who the Guide is for? - The information and material of this guide is particularly for PennState undergraduate applied statistic major students. However, anyone who intends to study or is actively studying applied statistics have access to most of the resources in this guide to study for themselves. □ What the Guide assumes - This guide assumes the reader to have the knowledge of STAT100 to understand the whole guide, even though some of the material such as F, Z, T table and ANOVA are introduced in other fields of study. □ Organization of this Guide - This guide is organized in a simple way to be as comprehensive as possible. There is a basic instruction on how to use the guide, and the list of useful websites for applied statistic major students. □ Tips for using this Guide - Use the Table of Contents to locate the section of your interest. - Tip section for each resources suggest solutions or additional information you are looking for. - More information about Applied Statistics or Statistics major information can be found on Penn State Department of Statistics website http://stat.psu.edu/ 3 PennState Department of Applied Statistic Online Program (PDASOP) Website: https://onlinecourses.science.psu.edu/statprogram/node/106 Abstract The official PennState Applied Statistic online courses website provides course overview, topics, prerequisite courses, and required textbooks of the mandatory classes for applied statistic major undergraduate students, from STAT100 to STAT470W. This helps the students get a rough roadmap and idea what classes and materials are needed in order to graduate. The information is up-to-date and revised every semester. PDASOP provides summary of each lessons for each courses, the students can study ahead or review the lessons. Moreover, they provides specific guidelines how to manage the study time and schedule classes, which is a crucial part of becoming a successful student. More information can be asked through “Where to go for Help!” section. Tips - Left column menus of listed STAT classes offer general information about the course. - Left column menus of Statistical Software gives introductions to the various stat program used during the class and actual field, such as R, SAS, MiniTab, etc. - Connect to any STAT class website, https://onlinecourses.science.psu.edu/STAT000 (000 according to the class number) for more class materials. 4 Stat Trek Website: http://stattrek.com Abstract Stat Trek is a website containing training tools and examples to solve statistic problems since 2000. They provide self-study materials for statistics, probability, and matrix algebra. Students can use this website to study themselves or a review. Also, the website has the statistics dictionary, formulas, and notations. This website is a great self-study resource for the students who are unfamiliar with video instructions. Tips - Study materials are found on the top menu “Tutorial”. - On the left bottom menu, you can purchase scientific calculators and statistics text books from various companies for a cheap price compare to other websites. - Resources on the bottom menu provides lists of helpful websites for statistics students. 5 Khan Academy Website: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability Abstract Khan Academy is a non-profitable educational website created in 2006 that offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard to help students study outside of class. The instruction videos can help students to get a basic idea of probability concepts, and also learn statistical analysis step-by-step. The instructors’ various examples and clear explanation allow the students to easily follow the videos. Tips - Instruction videos can be easily found on YouTube. - Khan Academy offers various subjects besides probability and statistics. 6 VassarStats Website: http://vassarstats.net/ Abstract VassarStats is a website of Vassar college professor Richard Lowry created in 1998, and the last update was in 2015. The website contains various statistical calculator and explanations, such as P-value, Z-value, T-value, Chi-Square calculator and all of the distribution for the undergraduate statistic students. These calculators can save a great amount of time for students on any assignment or homework. Furthermore, students can learn with instructions how to create ANOVA (Analysis of variance) and ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance) table, which are a crucial part of understanding statistics. The students can use the website to create their own ANOVA and ANCOVA table to seek out errors. Tips - Left column menus lead you to specific calculator and explanation - Each calculator has instruction of procedure and the results are printable. - Under the Probability section, you can create various types of table for adequate distribution. 7 The Annals of Applied Statistics (AOAS) Journal Website: http://imstat.org/aoas/ Abstract The Annals of Applied Statistics is a journal first published in 2007, and quarterly by Institution of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) providing articles relating to areas of applied statistics. The students can use this website to study more about the topic they are interested in by finding related articles. Tips - Next Issues menu on the left column will lead you to the newest articles, and published issues. - You can access articles in PDF form directly from the website, or through http://projecteuclid.org/euclid.aoas by clicking published issues. - It is free to use in electronically form, however you must pay for print version. 8 PSU Library Database: Statistical Abstract of the U.S. Database Website: http://statabs.proquest.com.ezaccess.libraries.psu.edu/sa/index.html Abstract PSU Library Database of Statistical Abstract of the U.S. is the online database of the statistical abstract of U.S. political, social, and economic conditions. The database contains data from 1970 edition to 2015 edition. They have 31 different data sections, each contains a huge amount of numerical data from the real world. Any stat students or alumni can access the database to use the data according to their needs, such as homework, assignments, and projects. Additionally, every data set provides index terms, publication, source, URL, and APA citation, which make the data more accessible and easier to reference in a student’s project or homework for stat classes. This is one of the best websites for undergraduate stat students for finding valid and reliable numerical statistic sources. Tips - You can access to all edition (1970-2015) from select edition scroll. - Instruction and more information are available in PDF form below the last section 31. - Sometimes they require you to log-in to ProQuest, use the PennState account. 9
