Dr. Andy Nish, M.D., an interventional radiologist, presented 4-5
cases about vascular problems. Dr. Nish had students walk through
history, physical exam, labs, and then procedures to be done. He
then went over the pathology and discussed treatment and

Friday, December 6
Dr. Jackie Stoken, D.O., a physiatrist in Des Moines, spoke to students
about how she incorporates OMT, acupuncture, and prolotherapy
into her practice. Around 35 students attended. The event was
cosponsored by SAACOFP, AOCPM&R, Holistic Medicine Club, and
SAAO. SAACOFP provided funds for lunch and advertised the event.
c. The Importance of Bone Marrow Donation and Considerations for
Joining the Registry, Monday, December 9
DMU SAACOFP and the DMU Oncology Club collaborated with the
University of Iowa Bone Marrow Donor Program to sponsor a
registration drive for the Be the Match® National Bone Marrow

community were invited to an informational lunch and presentation
about the registry, given by SAACOFP members. Students also heard
first hand experiences about transplantation and the importance of
joining the registry from a bone marrow recipient and donor. Lunch

a. House of Mercy Christmas Party, Friday, December 6
Two SAACOFP First-Year Liaisons planned this event, a Christmas
party for children at a local women’s shelter. Fourteen SAACOFP
members volunteered at the event. Gifts donated by the DMU
community were handed out to nearly 70 children ranging from
toddlers to 12 year-olds. The kids had an opportunity to meet with
Mr. and Mrs. Claus (Dr. Gary Hoff, D.O., and Dr. Roberta
Wattleworth, D.O., FACOFP). Children also participated in cookie
decorating, storytelling, and learned a Christmas song and dance.
b. Wesley Acres Volunteering, Friday, December 6
Four SAACOFP members visited participants of Wesley Acres’ Adult
Day Care Program from 1 to 3 p.m. Two members helped out with
afternoon programming including playing bingo with program
participants and serving a snack. The other two members helped
make dough for cookies for the upcoming holiday party.
c. Be the Match Bone Marrow Drive, December 10 and 11
On December 10 and 11, walk-in registration for the Be the Match®
National Bone Marrow Registry took place in the afternoon with
many SAACOFP members volunteering to help people through the
process. Forty-six people signed up to be new members of the Bone
Marrow Registry. The bone marrow drive was an excellent
opportunity for collaboration between various student organizations
on campus and with peers at the University of Iowa. The drive was
planned by DMU’s Chapter Vice President and two First-Year
Liaisons.
d. Iowa Homeless Youth Centers Dinner, Wednesday, December 11
A group of 5 SAACOFP members volunteered at the Iowa Homeless
Youth Shelter. We cooked a healthy meal of pasta and salad for

school, work, and their relationships.
