Position Location:

Work will be based in Visalia, located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and about 30 minute drive west of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Tulare

County. Visalia is located within the Kaweah River watershed just below Sequoia

National Park. The city has a population of about 125,000 with all major restaurants and stores. Summers in the Valley are hot, and can reach above 100 degrees F.

Sequoia Riverlands Trust (SRT) is a regional, non-profit land trust dedicated to conserving the natural and agricultural legacy of the southern Sierra Nevada and San

Joaquin Valley. Our mission is to protect working landscapes, wildlife habitat and scenic open spaces, while ensuring that economic growth in our communities remains vibrant and sustainable. To accomplish this, SRT engages landowners, farmers, conservationists and business partners in the counties of Tulare, Fresno, Kern and

Kings to collaborate for the land conservation of our Central California heartland.

Program Description:

The Conservation Department

’s primary objective is to help fulfill SRT’s mission of conserving natural and agricultural resources in our region. Our staff are biologists that are responsible for the natural resource management of SRT’s nature preserves; manage project sites that provide habitat for protected plant and animals; and monitor the conservation values of properties affiliated with SRT. Some of our core activities include:

● Conservation easement monitoring of ranches and farms affiliated with SRT;

● Invasive species, native plant, water quality, and grazing management on SRT’s nature preserves; and

● Implement and manage habitat restoration and mitigation projects (primarily native species plantings).

SNAP Position Description

We also work regularly with SRT’s environmental education staff to support their efforts to educate and foster the public’s appreciation for nature. Together, SRT’s conservation and education programs aim to increase the level of public interest and understanding about watershed in which they live, influencing them to become greater stewards of the land and resources which sustain them.

Position Description:

The Land Conservation Technician will primarily 1) conduct conservation easement monitoring of farmlands and rangelands affiliated with SRT, and 2) help carry out natural resource management activities on SRT’s nature preserves. These tasks involve a combination of office and field work.

The Member will work closely with SRT’s

Stewardship Director to become trained in native plant restoration, invasive species management, and land conservation policy and practices (via conservation easements).

The Conservation Technician will also provide support to SRT’s education program by assisting with outreach events.

Desired Qualifications:

B achelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or other natural resource field

Prior experience working outdoors, collecting data, and writing reports

Ability to identify common native and non-native plants in the San Joaquin / southern

Sierra Nevada foothill region

Interest in pursuing a science-based or natural resource career

Required Qualifications:

 Bachelor’s degree

Willingness to work occasionally on Saturdays (typically 1-2 Saturdays / month)

 Driver’s license, proof of insurance, and willingness to drive your own car for projects that are off-site, sometimes for long distances (mileage is reimbursed)

Ability to walk on uneven terrain, carry moderately heavy loads of 20-30 lbs, work outdoors, withstand high temperatures for several hours at a time.

Willingness to work long days in the field, use hand tools and motorized tools

Ability to work independently and part of a team

Must be reliable, able to follow directions, maintain a positive attitude

Excellent written and oral communication skills
