E-waste world record attempt success
All Moonee Valley residents who dropped off unwanted TVs, computers or computer
accessories at Council’s Transfer Station between 20 – 28 April have contributed to setting a
new Guinness World Record for the most e-waste ever collected for recycling in one week.
Council participated in the TechCollect ‘Australia’s biggest e-waste week’ campaign in late
April this year. The campaign saw over 474 tonnes in old TVs, computers and printers
collected for across Australia.
Collections in Moonee Valley during the week added up to 3.4 tonnes of recycled e-waste.
Moonee Valley Mayor, Cr Narelle Sharpe, said the campaign had been a fantastic way to raise
awareness about free e-waste recycling.
“We thank all Moonee Valley residents who participated in the campaign, and encourage them
to continue utilising this free service and spreading the word about it!”
“We provide a free, permanent TechCollect e-waste drop-off point at our Transfer Station,
where anyone can recycle their TVs, computers and computer accessories free of charge all
year round,” said Cr Sharpe.
“Council is eager to see a reduction in the amount of electronic waste that goes into landfill.
Around 90 per cent of all computers and TVs can be recycled and made into new products but
currently only around 17 per cent of Australia’s e-waste being recycled.”
“Later this year we’re going to see the analog television signal switched off in our area, making
a lot of older TV sets redundant. When the time comes to throw out your old, unwanted TV
sets, don’t forget that you can drop them off to be recycled free of charge as a part of our ewaste recycling service.”
Council’s Environmental Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Shirley Cornish said many e-waste
items contain valuable materials that can be reused, as well as components that can be
harmful to people and the environment if not disposed of correctly.
“Most of us have old, unwanted TVs or computers at home, gathering dust. Council’s e-waste
recycling service is great way to get rid of them safely and easily, without costing you a cent,”
said Cr Cornish.
What can be recycled at the TechCollect station:
Televisions, computers, laptops, notebooks, tablets, monitors, computer mice, printers,
scanners, keyboards, computer power supplies, printed circuit boards, motherboards,
network and memory cards, disk and CD drives, internal hard drives and web cameras
